This book is a must for anyone who is interested in making novelty cakes. The instructions are very well written and the pictures excellent. I have made most of the cakes in this book, most in between 2 and 4 hours(decorating time), they always look like the picture in the book - and believe me, I'm no expert. There's a cake for every age and occassion. A complete novice could easily get excellent results.

I made the castle cake on the front cover for my two year olds birthday party and it was a huge success. I have always bought cakes in the past for my girl's birthday party's, but am now a covert, a definate must for anyone wanting, but not daring to do it alone!!!

Lots of easy but interesting cakes. I have made and eaten 15 of the 30 cakes and found them to be very tasty. The recipes are fool proof and the pictures are wonderful.

What I like of this book are the variations Carol gives for most cakes in order to simplify work for the less eperienced ones of us! Also the tools used are ordinary things you already can find in your kitchen. Figure modelling is made easy and the use of edible writing pens help enourmously to make different facial expression which are very funny. There is a special section at the back which explains more in detail how to make figures and animals, and also a troubleshooting section. Excellent book for both beginner and more advanced cake decorator.

Mama D, I completely agree. My husband snorts with derisive laughter every time he sees the cover of this book.

I've now made three very successful and ooh-ed after cakes based on this book (fairy/Airbus A380 (!)/jungle animals), but every one has taken me around 5 hours to do. I invariably end up to my armpits in fondant icing at 3am the day before my children's birthdays frantically modelling.

The ideas & photos are good, but every cake uses fondant icing, which I have to order in pre-coloured to save time, which works out costly. You then spend hours trying to smoothly cover cakes/boards/accurately model figures.

If you're a novice I'd strongly suggest buying a book which uses simpler, traditional techniques such as chocolate icing & smarties for ladybirds & butterflies, or chocolate fingers & pre-made cowboy figures for a fort. Good luck!

I am a complete NOVICE, but, with the guidelines of this book, I am getting orders!
Honestly, I can bake a cake, but decorating is a different matter, and with the guidlines of this book, I am building my confidence, and building orders...
Step by step instructions are easily followed by those who have never even made a cake.
I now have TWO books by this Author, and she is brilliant.
I can guarentee at least one order a month now....

This is my second copy of this book as I my first copy was used so much it needed replacing! I have only done one of the cakes out of here but I use the cake recipe's all the time! I always get really good feedback from the people who I give the cakes too.
My grandma bought me the first copy as a gift when I started making cakes years ago and this time ive bought my own as I always use the cake recipe and follow it exact!
I have taken the time to cover the front and back book cover with clear plastic and have also covered the pages I use the most, so they don't get covered!
I made my sisters wedding cake using this book!
