I went into this book feeling a little apprehensive simply because the previous book 'Nine Minutes' was spectacular and I'll admit I had slight doubts that this could live up to my very high expectations.....yet it did and it didn't. I wrote and posted my review yesterday but I can't get past this book which usually means my review's not complete.
The blurb for this book is excellent so giving a summary seems a bit redundant plus there's already some very well written reviews so I'll just give my thoughts.
I was drawn straight back into this story and these characters, admittedly it helps that it's only a few weeks since I read the previous one but it was such a good feeling, it was told exactly the same way making it more like a continuation rather than a different book, which was exactly what I wanted.
It's so clever, a work of art really in places the way it's told with everything coming together, we see Grizz as a young boy and discover what made him the man he is today and even how he got his name, we also get the background we were missing on Grunt and some surprising past snippets of Ginny showing how she fits into it all.
Secrets are revealed, things are explained and yet more things come together, some of them totally unexpected and others work out just how we'd expected.
I was totally wrapped up in this book but I'll admit it was a little far-fetched in places and I didn't really see that it needed to be plus there were a couple of occasions where I just stopped and wondered why certain words/lines were used:
“.....He never once considered how you would feel when that sinkhole, or should I say stinkhole, started to swallow you up.

The two stars are purely out of fondness for the author, the writing style and the first book in the series Nine Minutes. I feel like although we 'learn' new things in this book the book doesn't really go anywhere. The book is set in 2000 where Grunt/Tommy and Ginny are married with two children - Ginny finds out Tommy was Grizz's son and she feels betrayed by him so there's martial tension. Literally the whole book is just focused on that and then jumping back through the past to Grizz's childhood (told from his POV), Tommy's childhood (ditto) and so forth. We re-vist earlier scenes from Nine Minutes but from a different POV. It all just felt very messy with the constant time/person jumping every other chapter.

I don't feel like this book was necessary to the characters stories and many of the scenes could've just featured in the first book or have been cut all together - they felt like 'filler' scenes.

I am torn. It wasn't a 'bad' book as in badly written or boring - far from it. But it wasn't what I'd expected and although not boring (because Beth Flynn i just such a good writer, you can't feel bored reading her words) and felt like there was so much potential from Book 1 that wasn't fulfilled.

*

So I left my review after reading 87% - have since finished and not sure what to make of the ending. One part of it elated me beyond belief but another part was so bewildering and odd and makes the book read more like some sort of fantasy book now?

Bumping to 3* just for the part of the ending I enjoyed.

Also, the author tries very hard to make Tommy/Grunt this amazing person (which he is totally) is but it just goes to show - you can throw everything into a character to make them amazing but when you have someone like Grizz to compare them to all of their amazing qualities fall flat. Team Grizz all the way!

This series completely took over my life for weeks once I finally picked it up. Both books were devoured in just two days, and then I started a re-read because it was just that good! Grizz and Ginny and Tommy consumed me, and I couldn’t get enough of their intense story. It really was like nothing I’d ever read before.

Jeez, Louise. This book was jam packed full of twists and surprises, right down to the very last sentence. It had answers to things I didn’t even question in Nine Minutes, but now I’m so glad to know these new bits of information. It just all added so much more to the story as a whole, as if it wasn’t exciting and addictive enough on its own!

And again, I cried, so, so much. It was absolutely worth all the pain. I cried through so many different emotions, and I honestly don’t think I’ll ever get over this series and the characters. Especially Grizz… Team Grizz for life!!!! It was hard knowing Ginny was now with Tommy, all while I was head over heels in love with Grizz, but that didn’t take anything away from the story at all. In fact I think it added to it.

The Nine Minutes series is one of the grittiest, most honest and refreshing reads I’ve ever encountered. It cuts right to the core of your very being and imbeds itself so deep in your soul, it ensures you’ll never forget it. I now painstakingly await the release of A Gift Of Time, the third and final book in the series which became a fast favourite.

Talk about a merry go round. I feel like I got on the ride and I've yet to get off.
I loved Grizz in the first book, and I haven't changed my mind.
That man owns me.
This book gives you a lot of background history, well as much as you can come to expect from a man like Grizz. Talk about a closed book.
I loved it so much, I feel for all the characters. What a predicament they find themselves in.
Lives full of deciept and lies. It's really hard to know who to trust. I really like Grunt, but there is just something about him for me, what I can't put my finger on.. maybe I'm just biased because I'm all for Grizz.
Who knows, but anyway this book it utterly gripping, I found myself with my mouth gaping open at some parts. It's a book to really keep you guessing.
I can well believe some of the things in this book, actually go on in real life.
I thought it was really well written, I loved Nine Minutes and this book is just as good if not better than the first.
I can not wait for the next book, that ending has my head spinning. It leaves the burning question....What the Hell is going to happen now?? Eeeeeek!!!!
