This is not your typical beach read. There are definitely some intense topics covered, but they are approached in a very gentle and encouraging manner that even someone who has never experienced anything like this can still appreciate the struggles.
As you can read from the other reviewers, the subject matter is alcoholism. The main female character, Kathy, is a recovering alcoholic and is struggling to find a new start in life. In an effort to help, her brother, Flynn, reaches out to Dylan, who runs a ranch where others who are struggling with addictions can seek assistance.
Over the ensuing weeks, Dylan and Kathy realize that they have more in common than they realize and a friendship builds into the promise of romance.
In addition to the theme of alcoholism, there's also the theme of "second chances." It seems that everyone in the story needs a second chance - including the animals. It's encouraging to read the various ideas proposed for reaching a second chance and helping heal past traumas / hurts. Plus, it encourages the reader to give second chances to those around them.
There's also a smaller theme regarding parenting / child custody. Is Kathy able to regain her son's trust? Will Dylan maintain his custody rights of his son? Or will the ex take them away? Then, there's the whole issue with their parents - can they break the cycle?
As I said above, this is much more than a run-of-the-mill romance. But, at the end, it was still a romance. I especially liked how the author developed the relationship between Kathy and Dylan. I don't think it ever got "too heavy" where it became a struggle to read.
Romance - PG / kissing only

Editing - "A"
My score - 5 stars
I really liked Dylan and Kathy. I was drawn into their lives. I loved the chemistry between them. I loved the banter. There are also some great secondary characters. I didn’t realize until I was doing research for this review that this is the third book in the Harmony Valley series. It is completely a stand-alone, but I’m excited to read about some characters who we read about again in this book.
There are a few twists in the book that I didn’t see coming – court room reveal – wowza. I love when the author can bring out unexpected tidbits. Also, there is an epilogue!

Dylan has been hired to work with a horse he is rumored to have a way with them and some say he is a healer. He has a big secret if this gets out it could be the end of their relationship. Everyone thinks is hire for the horse when in fact he was hired to keep her sober working through her issues. He needs this job with the child support he must pay but with their friendship growing he is in a mess of what to do or say.
The attraction is strong, the chemistry just right for these two as the work together working with the horse. Sooner or later things will come to a head when she finds out about his secret than it is anyone guesses to the outcome of their relationship. It sure doesn’t look good for them.
This story has meaning, feeling to it you can see it in the words it really pulls you in as the author hooks you with her plot. This was really a very heartwarming read that I could not put down. Each one of the books in this series just gets better than the last. You will find a little bit of everything in this well written story of starting over and finding your future with the one who means more to you than life.
Kathy has a problem. It's called alcohol. And it has cost her almost everything. Now back home out of rehab and trying to bridge the problems with her 8 yr. old son, she must face some tough choices. What does she want to do with her life, how is she going to beat this demon and stay sober? But she can't stand everyone always on guard or handling her like she is going to fail. Where is the support she really needs? And will her son ever forgive her for making him grow up too fast?
I received a copy from editor/author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. All opinions are my own.
Dylan is known as the horse whisperer, at least he was until an accident with a troubles horse he was working with leaves him a woman severely injured and his confidence shot. When he is faced with an opportunity to make some much needed money, he takes the job of helping Kathy. Unbeknownst to her. When feelings start to grow, and lies and horrible truths ore found out, can she remain sober or will she feel unworthy and let down once again? And with the chance of Dylan losing his son, can they even be together or will she be considered too high a risk?
