This is not your typical beach read. There are definitely some intense topics covered, but they are approached in a very gentle and encouraging manner that even someone who has never experienced anything like this can still appreciate the struggles.
As you can read from the other reviewers, the subject matter is alcoholism. The main female character, Kathy, is a recovering alcoholic and is struggling to find a new start in life. In an effort to help, her brother, Flynn, reaches out to Dylan, who runs a ranch where others who are struggling with addictions can seek assistance.
Over the ensuing weeks, Dylan and Kathy realize that they have more in common than they realize and a friendship builds into the promise of romance.
In addition to the theme of alcoholism, there's also the theme of "second chances." It seems that everyone in the story needs a second chance - including the animals. It's encouraging to read the various ideas proposed for reaching a second chance and helping heal past traumas / hurts. Plus, it encourages the reader to give second chances to those around them.
There's also a smaller theme regarding parenting / child custody. Is Kathy able to regain her son's trust? Will Dylan maintain his custody rights of his son? Or will the ex take them away? Then, there's the whole issue with their parents - can they break the cycle?
As I said above, this is much more than a run-of-the-mill romance. But, at the end, it was still a romance. I especially liked how the author developed the relationship between Kathy and Dylan. I don't think it ever got "too heavy" where it became a struggle to read.
Romance - PG / kissing only
Language - PG / Clean
Editing - "A"
My score - 5 stars
I really liked Dylan and Kathy. I was drawn into their lives. I loved the chemistry between them. I loved the banter. There are also some great secondary characters. I didn’t realize until I was doing research for this review that this is the third book in the Harmony Valley series. It is completely a stand-alone, but I’m excited to read about some characters who we read about again in this book.
There are a few twists in the book that I didn’t see coming – court room reveal – wowza. I love when the author can bring out unexpected tidbits. Also, there is an epilogue!

This is Kathy Harris and Dylan O'Brian story
This is a second chance story with a twist. As with most second chance story usually it's one of the main characters who have some type of drama going on. With this story Kathy has a few demons to over come, she is recovering from an addiction, trusting a and bonding issues. She loves animals and is working with Dr. Gage Jamero the town vet, remember him?
Dylan is known as the horse whisperer, he has a ranch that rehabilitates only horses but people too! Don't let him fool you he also has a few demons of his own to over come. It's awesome to read how this story unfolds and how each of these likable characters help each other over come their issues and in the end come together as a family...
Kathy's brother hired him to help rehabilitate her under the pretence that he would be rehabilitating a colt. Dylan hates to lie, knowing that if Kathy finds out her trust in him will be shattered. But Dylan has bills to pay or he risks losing everything- including his son. Kathy struggles with her sobriety and her own broken relationship with her young son. Life is not easy for anyone. Will they learn from each other? Will they be able to repair their broken relationships? Or will Kathy fall off the wagon and Dylan lose his business and his son - forever?
This story is very moving with its raw hurts and difficult life situations. One cannot help but feel for the characters and what they went through. I enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it. A great, clean romance that will make you think, feel, and one you won't soon forget.
