Half the CD was fine but why ruin a good quartet with strings? No stand-out tracks either unlike Time Out or Time Further Out.

These guys are best known for their Time out album, but this one is, at the very least, as interesting as that one. The sound quality is amazing, and the last piece with the orchestra will blow you away.

‘Time Changes’ is pretty much classic standard issue Brubeck. The tunes and arrangements are expertly crafted, enjoyable to hear and performed with the quartet’s usual élan. The one departure is the use of large orchestral forces on ‘Elementals’ which manages to pass off mixing the swing and improvising inclinations of the group within the structure of an extended (and in places slightly overblown) formal piece. It sounds like a film soundtrack looking for a film. Fans of all things DB will enjoy this album, others who want something a little more representative might consider looking elsewhere. Paul Desmond (alto sax), one of the great unsung heroes of jazz makes some nice contributions throughout. ‘Time Changes’ is a very nice album: charming and engaging, it wears its sophistication lightly.
