When European folk musicians go electric, the results usually have nothing to do with the style of their roots. Singer-songwriter Issa Bagayogo demonstrates that, in Mali, this is emphatically not the case: Timbuktu, which is the sequel to his debut disc Sya, is at once a 21st-century product and an affirmation of down-home local styles. In Mali they call what Issa does "Afro-electro", and this is apt, because the indigenous instruments fuse on equal terms with the gadgetry of the studio. Issa Bagayogo plays his ngoni lute with graceful economy, his backing singers keep their distance and the spacey synthesizer sounds clothe the whole thing in ambient mystery. Dance music this most certainly is, but at the same time it's so beguiling that you just want to keep still and imbibe this velvet-voiced singer's gentle art. --Michael Church

HASH(0x8b0e557c) out of 5 stars A sonorous wonder 16 Mar. 2002
By Shannon - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This album is simply beautiful. This is the first of its kind I've heard and I was blown away by the combination of suble, sophisticated arrangements and tight techno-like beats that would put most rap or techno albums to shame. The production is second-to-none and even though I don't understand a word, every song feels poignant and perfectly blended. This is an album with both rhythm and genuine musical quality. If you have ears, they will want to hear this.

HASH(0x8b0e55d0) out of 5 stars a wonderful african fusion album 7 Feb. 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
the latest installment in the travel series from six degrees, we find ourselves with mali records' issa bagayogo. this particular release is a fusion of soft electro and african chanting/singing/speaking, but without the synth lines of prior african fusion acts. what intrigues me the most is the method in which both the vocals and the instruments fuse and blend so wonderfully. this album contains great tracks inspired by all manner of electronic music, including hip-hop, drum'n'bass, breaks, and house - but done softly so as not to make the vocals a mere sample in the song. while this album is produced quite well, it is nothing that grabs you, sits you down, and forces you to listen. on the contrary, it is nice for background music and music for the car on an afternoon drive to a nearby city.

HASH(0x8b0e5858) out of 5 stars Rich Sounds 15 July 2002
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
When I first heard Issa, it was at a performance at an outdoors amphitheater and was hooked ? I rushed out to get his latest CD. He combines traditional West African music with modern electronica into a most distinctive contemporary sound, which is easy to listen or/and to dance. I enjoyed this CD very much and would highly recommend it!

HASH(0x8b0e59d8) out of 5 stars Issa Issa 23 Dec. 2004
By bk913 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
For the most part my musical tastes are all over the place, rooted in Hendrix, The grateful dead, Zep, Pat Metheny, Fela, the blues, jazz, funk, etc. Issa's Timbuktu and Toussomakan are delightful combinations of percussive, trans-type, hypnotic grooves that should proove to be wonderful additions to anyone's musical collection who has an open mind and is looking expand their horizons.
