It was Tiki Night at the Shepherds Bush Empire, so nobody was surprised when the Captain wheeled out the dreaded 'Happy Talk'. Well, at least he had the good grace to apologise.
Nothing else that night in July 2002 required an apology, however. The 21st century Damned are a startlingly hot rock 'n' roll band, steeped in their own very surreal mix of punk, goth, psychedelia, prog and general mayhem - as befits such an influential and trailblazing group.
The Damned were the first group on the 70s UK punk scene to release a single, an album, tour the States and appear on TV. A long and chequered career has produced in some of the most exciting and collectable records in rock. Presented for the first time as an audio-visual package, Tiki Nightmare is a spectacular demonstration of theatricality, menace, humour and rock n roll brilliance from a line-up featuring founder members Dave Vanian (vocals) and Captain Sensible (guitar) alongside Patricia Morrison (bass), keyboard player Monty Oxy Moron and drummer Pinch. Whether performing tracks from their recent (at the time) Grave Disorder album or belting out fan favourites like 'New Rose', 'Neat Neat Neat', 'Smash It Up' and 'Eloise', The Damned have rarely been more compelling.

Great playing - Captain on top form with his 'axe' and a very chipper Mr Vanian joins in the banter. There are lots of live Damned albums out there but this is one of the best. Stand out tracks are - Under The Floor Again; Neat Neat Neat and Smash It Up - fantastic guitar on all three and great bass by PM on Neat Neat Neat really holding down the beat whilst Sensible noodles and Vanian improvises.
The DVD of the concert is also good and the interviews with the band worth a watch.
If you are a fan this is definitely worth adding to the collection. If you don't know the Damned this live performance captures the essence of a band who always deliver a live SHOW not just a gig.
I shall comment on the DVD first - great gig, excellent sound and well shot with some nice camera angles and effects - certainly one of the better gig films I've seen. We also get some very informative interviews in the extras.
The double album is a recording of the aforementioned gig - certainly one of the best live Damned albums out there.
Finally, the package comes in a neat fold out sleeve, though the sleeve notes are a bit sparse which is unusual for Salvo.
Great value for this set (under £9 at the time of this review) but a bit of a pain if you've already bought the original DVD release.
