With his previous album Fallen Light Phaeleh cemented himself as one of dubstep's pioneers, adding a complexity to the ambient side of the genre that arguably, recently, had been faltering since artists like Burial put it on the map.

Tides follows on from this mantra, extending the emotional depth of both sound and production over and beyond Fallen Light. He successfully gives the listener the sense that they're engrossed in an album designed to take you on a journey. You cannot fault the production of the music, the complexity of the compositions nor the interesting and intricate style that has become characteristic of the artist. Phaeleh delivers everything one would expect from him, and blesses the listener with a deeper take on his sound at the same time.

Starting with the upbeat and atmospheric Journey, the album moves into an intricately crafted collaboration with Soundmouse, a stalwart collaborator from Fallen Light. Storm keeps the pace moving into Tokoi, a joyous summer tune that makes you instantly start tapping your feet. This is then followed by the epic Whistling in the Dark, a deeply moving song featuring vocals by Augustus Ghost, whose voice engages the listeners deepest attention.

A small piano interlude in Tides allows the listener to gather themselves before diving into Never Fade Away, which blasts you with high fidelity, foot tapping electronica for which Phaeleh has become renowned. Lighters come out for a big dub collaboration featuring Cian Finn in Night Lights, lifting the listener up and ready for the dreamy vocals and instrumentals of A Different Time.

With the listener suitably lifted, Phaeleh graces us with the final vocal based piece on the album, So Far Away.

I just love Phaeleh, such a nice distinctive sound. Unique as Burial but obviously in a different style and even genre.

HASH(0x902329b4) out of 5 stars Outstanding, as expected 25 July 2013

Phaeleh might be the most amazing electronic composer I have had the privilege of experiencing.

You want a description? Fine. Organic, tactile beats - spine-chilling, ethereal melodies - flawless production - Soul .

Check his other music out on YouTube, 8tracks, Spotify etc - buy a cheap older album - get a feel for this artist and see if he does it for you. After getting to the know the music a little, this album may shine even more brilliantly for you.

Distinguished peers in the same genre: Blackmill, Pretty Lights, Sun Glitters, Sound Remedy and many others.

Most tracks are multi-purpose, from high-rpm exercise to rainy day meandering. Some are more relaxed, but the entire album is an immersive experience.

Enjoy

You can tell in this album that Phaeleh is experimenting with different techniques and sounds. At first I was a little put off, because I was so used to his other tracks. But after listening to this album several times, it grew on me. I can't wait to see where Phaeleh takes these new experimentations of sound.
