Product Description

Product Description

Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges star in this comedy drama about an unlikely partnership between a retired thief and a drifter. Thunderbolt (Eastwood) hung up his stealing shoes a long time ago but misses the thrill and excitement. He hatches a plan to recover his lost loot from years before with the help of a few old friends. When hiding the money in an old schoolhouse Thunderbolt is startled by a homeless man by the name of Lightfoot (Bridges). When Thunderbolt's accomplices decide they want a bigger share of the findings, he and Lightfoot team up in an attempt to keep the money safe.

From Amazon.co.uk

Jeff Bridges actually corralled an Oscar nomination for his spirited, oddball performance in the genre-crime story Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, directed by first-timer Michael Cimino who (a short two films later) would bring down a studio with Heaven's Gate. Clint Eastwood plays a bank robber par excellence with a flair for explosives who is being hunted by his former partners, who think he has their loot from their last job. Bridges is his eager apprentice and sidekick, who helps him escape; when Eastwood finally makes peace with his hunters, Bridges convinces them to try a daring robbery--but things inevitably go awry. The relationship between Eastwood and Bridges is both funny and touching in this, one of Eastwood's better post-Dirty Harry efforts. --Marshall Fine

Having been an Eastwood fan for many years, I was overjoyed to see this film finally released on DVD. It is without doubt one of his greatest films, although Jeff Bridges steals the show, and received an Oscar nomination - in his first appearance!
The story is of the friendship between two very different characters, the old and seasoned veteran Eastwood, and the wild and irresponsable Bridges, who meet while Eastwood is escaping assasination by an old friend of Eastwood's, George Kennedy. Eventually they all get together to take on Montana Armoured Bank, with mixed results.
There's nothing new in the story or plot of this film, and admittedly it looks a little dated now, but the filmwork is outstanding, and Bridges shines. Coupled with a little action and a tragic ending, this film is truely wonderful!

The GOOD:
For a film made in 1974, this has delivered pretty well in hi-definition. I was pleasantly surprised by the picture quality. Presented in 2.35:1 widescreen, and with a LPCM 2.0 Stereo soundtrack, this is well worth the upgrade from DVD.

The BAD:
No extras (apart from a chapter selection).

Region-B only.

Running time: 114m 39s.

Clint Eastwood' and 'Jeff Bridges' are among my favourite actors, the film is also
among my favourites.
Thunderbolt' (Clint Eastwood) an experienced Robber. is running away from his
old partners, who seven years before were part of a $500,000 robbery, trouble
is 'Red' and 'Goody' want their share, 'Thunderbold' and a now deceased accomplice
had hidden the haul in an old school behind the blackboard.
'Lightfoot' (Jeff Bridges) is a wannabe villain, not really in the same league as his new
best friend, the two kinda run into each other moments into the film.
Well, 'Lightfoot' gets an early introduction into 'Thunderbolt's' world as bullets start flying
in their direction.
The pursuers 'Red Leary' (George Kennedy) and 'Eddie Goody' (Geoffrey Lewis) do
catch up with our heroes.......after a sequence of fisty-cuffs and threats, 'Thunderbolt'
informs his former partners that where the money had been hid is no longer there, a new
school standing in it's place.
After a suggestion from 'Lightfoot' the four plan to re-hit the bank the original team had
robbed seven years before, trouble is, none of them have any cash, and they need
expensive equipment to re-enact the previous heist........they have to work to raise the
necessary funds (Something they are clearly not used to doing)
Each of the four must play their part if the Robbery is to go to plan............however, is
there honour amongst thieves ?
The film has some great car-chases, a few scenes of violence, some adult content and
a bucket-load of humour, with an element of sadness.
Great Chemistry between 'Clint' and 'Jeff' -these guys really are great actors.
The Blu-ray version is quite a step-up from the DVD version, not perfect but more than
acceptable.

Huge disappointment... it is just bare film (not a single set of subtitles available, just one audio, no bonuses) and quality of transfer is not anything astonishing at all. In some scenes there are a lot of artifacts (especially when blue sky is behind). I really regret buying it. Film as is is unique masterpiece and deserve much, MUCH more than this edition :(

This is a widescreen on 4;3 aspect DVD, which means you have to zoom in on a 16:9 display or you get a tiny image floating in the middle with black bars top bottom and each side.

I think it is about time DVD makers caught up with the fact that a lot of people have wide screen TVs now, and also that the description on Amazon should highlight the aspect ratio.

Story is just as good as it ever was, however.

A thoroughly enjoyable early-70s crime thriller, the debut from writer-director Michael Cimino. Perhaps a sign of the times but the laughs do sit a little uneasily with the sometimes brutal violence. The picture quality is ok but the biggest annoyance is the product info on the back. It says the picture is presented in letterbox, but then is described as 4:3 full frame. (Sort of) thankfully it's letterboxed, preserving the 2:40:1 aspect ratio, but 16:9 anamorphic would've been much better.

I have always had this film in my collection, originally on VHS Video tape. I now have it on DVD, from Amazon.

IT IS A CLASSIC IN IT'S OWN RIGHT!

Jeff Bridges and Clint Eastwood play there roles perfectly. This will always be in my movies top-ten list.

Best Regards
Steve Timmins

This is a wonderful blend of drama, action and comedy. But it also turns the reality of the lives of these criminals from tongue-in-cheek during the first half of the film to an emotional and tense final act where we really see the motives and greed behind certain people.

Bridges steals the show as a wild and carefree Lightfoot, in his Oscar nominated role, sharing the screen with Eastwood who work so well together, and genuinely show a developing and caring friendship. Their smiles and laughs are more than just acted.

Kennedy proves to be an intimidating anti-hero, and gives the two leads a good pillar to bounce off.

Filled with natural cinematography and a cracking script where all characters are developed perfectly alongside a great heist, this is a surprising and entertaining story with a touching, emotional ending.
