Kedna is an open minded weather elemental talent but when she was young and before she learned to control it, her younger sister, Lira who was also a strong mental talent would push her with her mind to do tricks for her for amusement with Kedna's talent and the end result would almost kill her. Kedna comes from a family of talents but most are mild to moderate and not strong ones like her and Lira. Lira is sent off to a Citadel and because Kedna's mind is open she is sent to the planet Iskan whom was willing to put off his changing of his surface to help her gain control over the elements. She was eleven years old when she was left in the care of Halwis, Iskan's avatar and Iskan himself to start working on herself. Could you imagine the burden for one so young to live on a planet with no one but a planet and his avatar. She was able to have contact with her family via a com but until she would gain control she would remain there as Halwis-Iskan as her pseudo family and they did grow quite close.
When Kendra was sixteen she was needed by the Sector Guard to help a planet with their weather system and that is when she met Haedock or Tend, a descendant of Halwis and also a minder and healer. After her first mission she was not to see him again until she was almost 23 years old. The descendants of Halwis are Iskanoi and they wanted to come back to their planet surface but unwilling to mix with other species and wanted to stay racially pure which was really killing themselves off and was really put off when Iskan decided he wanted his surface to become an Iskan Citadel and Sector Guard base, specializing in special strong talents like Kendra and Halwis-Iskan wanted her to be the one to get it going and to run it. If fact she considered her talent a world wrecker if left untrained. Once Kendra was 23 yrs old, Haedock asked to court her and she said no but eventually relented after the Citadel had their first talents and they were well into training.
I know I probably gave away too much of the story but I really liked it. The characters were well developed and the story was solid. Viola Grace's novellas are good reads especially when looking for something to fill the time when you have a busy life or between longer novels.
My job is very stressful, and these are very short escapism which fills a need for brain dead relaxation, but I badly resent paying $4 bucks for something which would make one chapter of a better book. You could put 5 of these together and come out with something I would pay four bucks for cheerfully, but that price for a very few pages? Really?? Seriously????
I'm going back and re-reading my Krentz collection - they are feel-good romance too, but they have a plot, charactor motivations that make sense, and I'm getting a lot more value for my expenditure. Hell, even 'Restoree' is better than this stuff, and it made at least as much sense. Getting tired of authors who believe that the only function which earth women can fulfill well in space is as breeders.
Moo. I mean Boo.
