"Its fun, its beautiful, it s deceptively clever, and it s the most purely entertaining thing I ve read in months." --Geek Hard
"Critchlow is an immensely talented artist... a gifted comic storyteller, using some glorious puns...This is funny stuff, brilliantly drawn from a British talent almost as big as his greatest creation. Buy it." --Cartoonists Club of Great Britain
"Thrud manages to poke fun at nearly all of the conventions of fantasy stories, but does it in a wink-wink manner like Monty Python. It s funny and quirky with in-jokes aplenty." --Borg.com
"Humor, great one-liners, and over-the-top violence with swords and fists." --Retrenders
"With the contemporary popularity of intelligently silly and fantastical things like Adventure Time and The Venture Brothers (the latter of which s Brock Samson character would seem to at least partially be inspired by Thrud), I see no reason why this shouldn t be the moment in time when Thrud The Barbarian finds its largest and most receptive audience yet." --Project Fandom

After period in the wilderness, this hardback edition collects all five issues of Carl Critchlow's self-published, full-length and full-colour Thrud comics, along with the four 'lost' Valkyrie Quarterly whole-page colour stories, throws in a couple of classics from the early White Dwarf days and rounds it out with a two-page sketchbook.
Titan books have done justice to the first Thrud collection since 1987 with this high quality hardcover.
Absolutely essential for fans of the mighty-thewed and peanut-brained warrior; the expansion of his adventures from strip to comic format is done without missing a beat, a single axe swing or puzzle-til-you-laugh pun, amidst the superb art.
And if you haven't encountered this brand of eternal barbarian humour and mayhem before, this is a fine place to start.
I remember Thrud from White Dwarf magazine, so was expecting a collection of the small amusing strips from there. Instead there are 5 full stories, with a few of the strips thrown in at the end. Was I disappointed? No.
Would I like some more? Yes please!
Not that the tales here originate from the 80's. No... these are the lush, full-colour, narratively-extended, most-Millennial Thruds... and stupidly good fun they are, too. There are also four pages of the 'original' White Dwarf-period strips, too... although the reduced A5 format doesn't really accommodate these so well. Shame.
Two other thoughts worth voicing:
i) If they've chosen this moment to do a 'collected Thrud', this doesn't mean that Carl Critchlow's decided to throw in the towel, does it..?
ii) Years ago, there was a collection of the White Dwarf one-pagers... copies of which (very, very) occasionally surface on a certain well-known auction site. For the devoted, this is very well worth seeking out.
