So you liked 'Pain' off the Buffy the Vampire Slayer album? Well, 'Thrown to the Wolves' is pretty much more of the same, yet perhaps never quite displaying the catchy riffs and raw 'singalong' status of 'Pain'.
This is not to say that the album isn't any good, as tracks such as 'She Knows' and 'Violent' capture a similar atmosphere to the aforementioned track, and a more 'gentle' side to the band can be found in 'Fate'.
The rest of the tracks on the album are good, yet none really stand out as excellent. However, if you are looking for a break from the tired pop/rock genre (i.e. Ash), Four Star Mary are a breath of fresh air. As far as I know, they sound like no-one else out there. Despite the somewhat 'softcore' sound of the band, the vocalist really shines through as the definingly great part of Four Star Mary. Perhaps similar to Pearl Jams' Eddie Vedder (although not that similar) Tad Looney is the life-essence of Four Star Mary (arn't all vocalists?).
To conclude this rather lengthly review, if you appreciate good rock music, I would recommend 'Thrown to the Wolves'.
special note to Buffy Fans: to those fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, who particulary enjoyed the bands seen and heard playing in the Bronze during the better days of the series, I would especially recommend this album, as Four Star Mary are perhaps the best of the bands to appear on the show.

I bought this album on import last year. Four Star Mary are the sound behind Oz's band "Dingoes Ate My Baby" on the Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series, so if some of the tracks sound familiar, you'll know where you've heard them before! This is their first full album, after the eponymous EP available in the US.
Thrown to the Wolves is a terrific collection of powerful alternative rock, with some memorable shout-along choruses! The first track "Dilate" starts the album off with a bang, and it hurtles along right from there. Best songs have to be "She Knows", the unadulterated version of "Pain" (also on the Buffy soundtrack), and the slower "Dark Skies". The band have a lot of energy, and some great lyrics displaying depth and emotion.
I was also lucky enough to catch the band on tour in the UK last year - the gig was excellent, and they come highly recommended as a live outfit - see them if you can!

The best band to come out of the US since...since... well they're pretty damn good. FSM mix melodic punk, rock and indie with effortless ease, the loud crunchy guitars are softened by Tads sometimes heart rending lyrics and gruff voice. The whole album is one big jump-around-your-bedroom bonanza, except for Thrown to the Wolves, which is a lie-on-your-bed and cry your eyes out bonanza! You might as well let it set up home in the CD player because it'll never come out I guarantee you that ;-)

This album is the best I have. It may take a while to get use to but after that I'd didn't know what I did without it. They have songs to suite any mood from happy to sad. Four Star Mary have appeared in MTV's The Real World and Party of Five and their vocals can be heard a number of times in the Bronze in Buffy the Vampire Slayer!!!

Its rare to find a band who can make a CD without a weak track on it, Four Star Mary are such a band. Many people have heard "Pain" (from Buffy) which is admittedly a good track and provides a good intro to the band but better is to come. "Dilate" grabs hold and pulls you into what can only be described and a blinding journey through 40 minutes of guitar driven rock. "Dark Skys" slows the pace briefly and is followed by "She Knows" which is probably the strongest and best track on the album. This is a real sing-a-long CD, you won't be able to help yourself or be able to take it out the CD player. I bought the import 6 months ago and didn't get the added benefit of the extra UK released version with 2 bonus tracks but such is life. If you only buy one CD this year make it "thrown to the wolves" its a move you won't regret. If they're playing near you don't pass up the chance to see and hear a truly excellent band.

I have had this album since last year when I bought it on import, and have recently seen the band live in Liverpool. After noticing that it was Four Star Mary's music behind the ficticious Buffy band Dingoes Ate My Baby, I got "Thrown To The Wolves", and I was not disappointed. All the songs on the album are brilliant, with my personal highlights being "Dilate", "Pain", "Never Mind", "She Knows" and "Violent". The thing that really makes this album special to me is that not only are the band talented musicians, but the lyrics are both thoughtful and heartfelt, which the music world seems to be lacking at the moment, with pop acts taking over the charts. This is a great introduction to the band and if you enjoyed the songs featured by Dingoes Ate My Baby on Buffy, many of them are on this album, such as "Pain", "She Knows" and "Shadows".

I bought this album after hearing many of the songs in the hit show "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and was instantly overjoyed. I have nearly 200 albums and out of them I have maybe 10 that I love completely (every song). "Thrown to the Wolves" is currently on top of the list. If like me you are sceptical about buying a cd from a band who are less than well known then dont worry. If you've seen Seasons 1-3 Buffy and like ANY of the songs by the shows band "Dingoes ate me baby" (Oz's band) then you'll love this CD, because its Four Star Mary. BUY IT NOW I GUARANTEE YOU'LL LOVE IT UNLESS YOU'RE A 75 YEAR OLD NUN!! You're not a 75 year old NUN.....are you???
