This is a stand-alone contemporary romance. I really enjoyed it.
Cooper Montgomery is a wonderful character and I liked him a lot. He is the CEO of a film production company that his father had started. His brother, Miles, has his own company that produces reality TV programmes. When Cooper meets Kate at a poker game, he's immediately attracted to her.
Kate Monroe is also a wonderful character and I liked her too. Her father was a well known poker player. However, due to her father's debts, she signs up for a reality TV show called Throb. When she meets Cooper she is attracted to him, but because of the rules of the show and the contract she signed, she finds herself torn between following the rules or breaking them.
I love reading Vi Keeland's books. I have been a huge fan of this author's ever since I was first introduced to her books in 2013 and I read Belong To You. I downloaded a copy of this book in 2015. Unfortunately, due to my large reading list, I was unable to read it until recently.
I started to read and was quickly hooked. I didn't put this book down until I had finished it.
This book is told through the eyes of both Cooper and Kate, which gives the reader the opportunity to see their thoughts and feelings. The chemistry between Cooper and Kate is extremely explosive from the start and hot enough to scorch the pages. I also loved meeting a few of the other characters who were likeable and lifelike. In fact all the characters were lifelike, with flaws and insecurities which made them more real. Miles came across as a spoilt brat, though he didn't have a lot of page time. I must admit that I liked Flynn Beckham, the bachelor from the TV show. He seemed a really nice guy and I could fall for him myself.
I am not a huge fan of reality TV and I cannot see the appeal of putting on a fake show and calling it "reality". It is not natural or real. Real life is doing household chores, working, raising a family and earning a living the hard way. Not parading around a jungle doing tasks to earn food or sitting in a house full of strangers and again doing tasks to earn specified outcomes, just to earn lots of money and fifteen minutes of fame. Luckily, this book doesn't focus on this aspect, but the relationship between characters who live their lives off camera. The story took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride from beginning to end. I loved the dialogue and the way the characters all interacted; I could picture everything in my mind's eye with ease. As this book is a stand-alone, this book doesn't end in a cliffhanger. Having said that, I am now looking forward to reading Beat when I get the chance.
Vi Keeland has written another exciting erotic romance. I love her writing style, which is fast paced and exciting. The story flowed wonderfully too. I love reading this author's work. She is one of my favourite contemporary romance writers, and I will continue to follow her career with interest.
As this is an erotic romance, there are several scenes of a sexual nature that are rather hot and explicit, as well as some strong language. Therefore, I do not recommend this book for readers younger than 18. However, if you love hot, steamy erotic romances, this book is for you! - Lynn Worton
In this book the author has shown me that there is no limit to her versatility. The storyline is well plotted out, her characters’ personalities are extremely well developed and above all, it is clear to see that she’s done her homework regarding the Hollywood scene. I was thirty-five percent into this read and was forced to put this book down; however, I can assure you that I didn’t want to! This was when I was able to make my first solid opinion. “God forbid; this is a hellishly good read,” I said to myself! On very rare occasions do I start to write a review before finishing a book, and this was the case! I am also aware that one shouldn’t start off a review like this either as I am actually summing up…
But let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of what appears to be an enthralling triangle where the reader wants each of the main protagonists to come out tops! Obviously, this is asking too much; all said and done, someone has to be the loser. Who will it be I asked myself? Yes, the story of Kate Monroe, Cooper Montgomery and Flynn Beckham is most certainly intriguing!
Quote: "Good things don't usually come easy. And I love a challenge."
I’m really not one for letting on; nevertheless, to get you in the picture; please excuse the pun because this story revolves around the movie world and reality shows, is not only about a contest, but also about who will win Kate’s heart.
Quote: "She's my girl next door. Looks sweet and innocent, but she has a streak of something wild."
Kate is between a rock and a hard place. She thinks she knows what’s best for her, but sometimes doing the right thing isn’t always the best option. She’s temporarily parked her doctorate in physical therapy, and even though she’s inherited her abilities to play a mean game of poker from her father which helps her economically, it’s not enough. Now she’s competing in a reality show and she needs to win. Why? The answer will be divulged in the story!
Quote: "Hearing that he is showing any sign of improvement, physical or mental, lifts my heart. I'm already glad I came."
And not only that, who do you think is producing the show? None other than Cooper’s brother, Miles! I didn't like this man from the very beginning of the story. He's not business savvy, is eaten up with jealousy and harbours a grudge against his oldest brother. Saying that, the author has deftly described his obnoxious persona to perfection. And Kate. Deary me! She had no alternative but to sign on the bottom line of his contract with more fraternising clauses in it than for her own good.
Quote: "Violation of any of the terms of the contract will result in forfeiture of any prizes. And you can, and will, be sued for breach of contract."
Coop Montgomery is the drop-dead gorgeous CEO of one of the most successful movie production companies in LA. I could envisage him so clearly while writing this review! Dazzling green eyes with shiny black hair just touching his white shirt collar and dressed in an Armani suit is my kind of man. Not to mention rippling muscles in all the right places. Domineering when he should be, considerate, highly professional and a real hotty. Mind you, Coop’s controlled world will come tumbling down in brackets when he meets up with Kate. He’ll do things quite inappropriate to his character just to have more time with her. The sexual tension palpitates to such a degree that I was indeed tempted me to put the air-conditioning on; and it’s winter!
Quote: "We don't take IOUs," I tease. She looks me in the eye. "It's my phone number. Didn't think any of you would want my lipstick or a tampon."
Flynn Beckham rocks! Mmm, sexy, tattooed, and knows how to turn on the charm. This promising rock star is without a doubt, attractive and a ladies man. He loves them, they love him. I did, too! One problem though. In spite of the fact that female participants are gradually being eliminated from Throb, the reality show, he only has eyes for a lass who is still in the game but won’t let her barriers down. “Or will she?” you may ask.
Quote: "Not to be a pig here, but Jesus, Kate, you look like you might have an orgasm."
Of course, throw a spanner in the works for good measure and one is assured of a good read. Animosity between the two brothers is laid on thick. And the secondary characters play a huge part in the making; add the author’s knack of describing her protagonists' moods which is quite incredible, et voilá! At times I felt my frustration with them would get the better of me. I could have quite happily strangled one of them!
Quote: "My whole mood has changed and I know I'm acting like a jerk for taking it out on her, yet I can't seem to bring color to my own self-induced grey mood."
Throb is outstandingly absorbing, sensual and emotional. You might even shed a tear or two. So my recommendation to you folks is just read it. I can honestly say that you’ll be hooked well before you reach the end. A quicky to the author. You have unequivocally outdone yourself! Bravo!
