The Thrive Diet is much more than just a diet book. The athlete/author Brendan Brazier has spent a life time researching nutrition for sports, seeking ways to improve his performance, and more importantly his recovery time, post exertion. He has addressed U.S congress on the subject of improving nutrition and his findings are not only relevant to athletes and those who take their exercise seriously, but to every person concerned about how what they eat affects their body, and even their mind.

Since reading T.Colin. Campbell's The China Study, I've been searching high and low for recipes and ideas on how to adapt to a whole foods, plant based diet. I found Brendan Brazier's book advertised on the Colin Campbell web site and despite not being an athlete myself, decided it would surely have some recipe ideas I could use too.

The information in the first third of the book is extremely valuable, and forgive the pun, easily digestible. Brazier explains the concept of nutritional stress, how we place our metabolism under constant stress not only by eating unhealthy foods, but by NOT eating ENOUGH natural, unprocessed foods with high nutritional value. Brazier sums it up as "the absence of healthy food in the diet is a form of stress". Since physical activity -particularly high stress sports or exercise- also stresses the body, we need to be more careful of how we replenish the muscles and cells, even after ordinary day to day activity, since mental and emotional stress also play their role in depleting the body of nutrition, vitality and energy.

I take my hat off to Brendan.
Despite - or because of? - not being a nutritionist, he critically deconstructs many commonly held beliefs about what we all 'normally' eat and replaces it with what actually works in terms of performance and nutrition.
He comes at it from the perspective of a (high achieving) athlete, but I find his prescription for a mainly raw, whole food eating programme (let's lose the word 'diet') also fits with my own environmental and ethical world view.
Most of all, it makes you feel great - I've felt clear headed, energetic, and lost weight without actually trying to.
Yes, there are some new ingredients and different ways of putting together meals (lots of seed oils for omegas, for example), and you have to get organised to do the prep. But in the last three months as I've been gradually getting more and more into it, I've been less stressed, more satisfied by my food, and noticed significantly more balanced moods, especially during my premenstrual phase (food as medicine, and it works).
It'll make you look differently at food and what it does to your body.

What a fantastic book. Really great and very tasty recipes! My meat eating husband actually LIKES this food. Incredible - he has turned down most veg offerings but food is lovely and the information is fascinating.Better still it's useful and easy to understand.

I tried to be vegan a couple of years ago and just found it confusing. I tried to "copy" usual meals and sub stuff in to replace it. Yes i did have a copy of becoming vegan I was never really confident of quantities and what to do. This book has answered all my questions and brought it together. Now I KNOW I'm eating really well, very healthy and I really enjoy my food. Took a while to get into figuring out the prep but it's getting easier. Best is that I feel good - as in really good. My kids are ok getting into it too. What more can I say?

If you're interested in changing for the better - this is a great start. Go for it.
Thank-you Brendan for taking the time to write this all up and share it. Great work.

I bought this book because I was curious about how an athlete would thrive with a plant based diet. It has a ton of recipes and most use regular ingredients, the kind you'll find at a random supermarket. Of course there are some which are a bit more special. All in all it gives you the why, the what and the how to become and thrive as a vegan athlete (and even as a regular semi-active person). I'd recommend for the health enthusiast and vegetarian/vegan curious.

Although I had already studied a lot on diet and nutrition due to a conspiracy by the universe to force me to eat well, this book is one of the most complete I have read. Being a vegetarian and required to follow a low GL diet to maintain my health, I have found the advice in this book to be really good. It has not really changed the way I eat but has given me confidence that my decisions were the right ones and backed the advice up with good theoretical information. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to live a healthy lifestyle and the nutritional advice is well worth reading.

I found this book interesting and helpful, but only give it 4 stars because it lacks images and I need this to help me see how recipes should turn out. With a few inspiring images, it would definitely be a five.
It's a good introduction to raw, as it includes some cooked transition recipes for those who want to cut out wheat, sugar and processed food without being 100% raw
I have started making vegan pancakes from buckwheat and hemp flour and really enjoy these. I have been trying to be high raw but find life without bread pretty miserable; I have had pancakes every day and haven't missed bread for a couple of weeks.
There are good ideas for energy bars and some more filling types of foods if you feel, like me, you cannot live on salad alone!
The information on protein and nutrition in general was very helpful.
I am using this way of eating to combat chonic fatigue and it seems to be having a positive effect.
