I have been listening to this album ever since it came out 25 years ago ! and it was one of the albums that got me into genesis. It still sounds as good today as it did then, it has everything , great sound, great atmosphere, fantastic music and a brilliant choice of tracks. The "in the cage medley" being a particular highlight. For anyone with a slight interest in the "rockier" side of genesis , and who has never been lucky enough to see them live , this is a must have album, you will not be dissapointed .

This was the last Genesis I bought on release (although the writing was on the wall as I had already passed on 'Abacab'). I think I was initially drawn to it by the 'It/Watcher of the Skies' medley. Over 30 years later, I remain impressed at the wonderful musicianship and the value added by Chester Thompson, in particular. A right has been wronged as I was at Knebworth 78, but it was only discovered recently that this was where the version of 'Fountain of Salmacis' had originally come from due to a tape labelling mix up. So I also discover I was part of it after all!

An excellent live album although I'm one of those who is not overly fond of the "Abacab" era. The "In the Cage" medley is the highlight as it is a rare example of Genesis being able to rock. [Note that there are two fabulous out-takes that are equally punchy: Down in the Motherlode and The Lady Lies, both of which appeared on the second Genesis Archive box set.]
If you're considering buying the mp3s please note that the indexing in the second half of disc two is wayward. The tracks are {listed - actually}:
One for the Vine (6') - the first half of One for the Vine
The Fountain of Salmacis (6') - the second half of One for the Vine
it / Watcher of the Skies (16') - The Fountain of Salmacis (approx. 8') / it / Watcher of the Skies
This part of the CD has been incorrectly indexed ever since the first edition back in the nineteen eighties but you know how it is - record companies never listen to the fans.

If I was ever stuck on a desert island, and could take only one album, this would have to be it. I love music from all genre's but this is the album that got me into Genesis, espcially the track One for the Vine.

Some great tracks, its moves along so well, and its a pleasure to listen too.

Its a shame it was not the orignal American release which featured studio tracks on side 4, hence the title of the album, but any Genesis fan worth thier salt will have a copy of that version anyway !

A great driving cd

Well, where do I start with this review of the G-men's third live album?
Perhaps I could say Three Sides Live represents some of their back catalogue missing from Seconds Out (In The Cage/Afterglow, The Fountain Of Salmacis etc.) as well as a few of their more recent album tracks and hit singles (Abacab, Follow You Follow Me, Misunderstanding etc.) as the guys started to gain a significantly larger following than in the days of Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett.
To hear the In The Cage/Afterglow medley on CD is a genuine delight, as are the last two tracks featuring Hackett and Bill Bruford. Can't be beat.
The only downside to the album is the dodgy trackings on disc 2, but that shouldn't really put you off too much!

Like other listeners, I have been listening to this album for the last 30 years and never get tired hearing tracks such as In the Cage, Fountain of Salmacis and It. The mixing and sound production seems to catch the essence of the live shows and it certainly catches the excitement and powerful sounds of guitars, drums, bass pedals and keyboards. Tony Banks has to highly praised on this album for his solo breaks and excellent accompanying skills.

Whilst I prefer Disc 2, as Abacab represented Genesis on it's continued transformation from progressive rock to more pop based songs, this process starting in 1978 with "And then there were three", disc 1 has some delightful moments, such as "Behind the Lines".

What has continually annoyed me about this cd and earlier versions is that the indexing of tracks on CD2 are wrong. There is no break from the beginning of Fountain of Salmacis right through to the end of Watcher of the skies! Very annoying and as stated by others, has been mentioned by time and time again. Still no change. This problem also occurs on Seconds Out (1977) with no track break between Dance on a Volcano and then Los Endos.

Having said that, great performances capturing the sound of that period. Compare this cd with Live Over Europe, and one can easily hear the difference quickly, "Three Sides Live" being a warmer, thrilling and a wholly more convincing rendition of good pieces.

Simply the best progressive rock live album from the 80's. It's a bit of the real Genesis and its powerful scene act.

The atmosphere created from this live album recorded from several gigs in America and Europe, is one that is hard to match. The sound quality for a start is superb, so all subtleties can be hard in excellent clarity. What sells this album for me are the rare live takes of Behind the Lines and Duchess, quite marvalous. Several tunes namely Dodo and Abacab are linked in a segue, with super proggressive drumming from chester. On of the highlights though is the last couple of tracks on CD 2, recorded in 1976, and feature Hackett and Bruford, yet still posess the same quality of musicanship and blend into the album very well. All in all an excellent example of 80s Genesis, a must for the collection.
