Product description

Review

THE THREE is really wonderful. A cross between Michael Crichton and Shirley Jackson, hard to put down and vastly entertaining. (Stephen King)

Sarah Lotz is a ferociously imaginative storyteller whose twisty plots will kick the stairs out from under you. She's a talent to watch. (Lauren Beukes)

The finest thriller I've read in years. Dark, subtle and completely unputdownable, I was enthralled from the opening line to the last. (Sarah Pinborough)

Compulsive reading (Marie-Claire)

Sarah Lotz has just written the perfect horror story. This will be undoubtedly one of the best horror stories published in 2014. (The Book Plank)

It's reminiscent of Stephen King's CARRIE and THE THREE comes preloaded with praise from the master of horror himself. It deserves it: this high-concept thriller is a blast. (The Guardian)

Tiptoeing the tightrope between fantasy and horror (Daily Mail)

One of the finest, freakiest horror novels I've read. (Chuck Wendig)

The author's use of the oral-history format, with its shifting voices and points of view, is a stroke of genius: the reader is in a state of near-constant confusion at the beginning, which is slowly replaced by unease and then dread as the various commentators start to see the bigger picture. A very creepy, very effective novel. (David Pitt Booklist)

A clever method of collating a book - there's a book within the book which is made up of research into the events and using different sources. Personally I found the Japanese cyber-chat sections a bit boring but that may be more appealing to a younger reader. The overall premiss is good but I did feel it never really got going to fever pitch. It is quite a swipe at US religious preachers at times - almost a side purpose to the book. But enjoyable and a good ending.

Initially this book and the basic premise of the story had me intrigued, and the start of it was riveting however it starts to sag in the middle with one possible theory revisited far too many times with no real room for much exploration of other potential theories. The pace picked up again towards the end so I was once again enthusiastic for a final explanation for all the events that had occured... how cheated I felt when I got to the last paragraph and there was nothing else. Don't get me wrong, I love an ending that haunts you and leaves you pondering things but this book seems to have forgotten to include any sort of ending! It seems that this author can dream up some wonderful and intriguing story elements but doesn't need to bother explaining any of it. Not a single thing. It's a poorly executed storyline which is a shame as it had bags of potential.

My book queue was desperately low and went to Amazon's recommendations. This is written in an odd interview style. It's not the greatest sci-fi fantasy I've read, but not the worst either.

Good premise but very irritating as no real resolution or answers. Reading this novel just felt like a lot of hard work with no much payback. Not worth it.

Not as good as I'd hoped as each chapter jumps around from character to character so at times a confusing read.

I was sucked into reading this after seeing a review comparing it to Stephen King, but it's lacking something special and left me feeling disappointed
