Product Description

Product Description

Three Cane Whale is a new multi-instrumental trio, playing acoustic miniatures which draw influence from folk and minimalist music. 8232; 8232;Alex Vann (mandolin, bowed psaltery, music box) is mandolinist with the hugely innovative and influential band Spiro. Pete Judge (trumpet, harmonium, lyre, glockenspiel) plays trumpet for the equally highly-regarded Get The Blessing (BBC Jazz Award-winners) and for the duo Eyebrow. Paul Bradley (acoustic guitar) is the maverick genius behind legendary Bristol band Organelles, and has his own one-man music-and-storytelling show, The Owl. Alex and Pete have also worked together previously as musician-performers with Kneehigh, the acclaimed Cornish theatre company.

Had Simon Jeffes of Penguin Cafe (PCO) lived, this may well be what his music would have evolved into. This is a beautiful album. On first play it envelops you in comfort (comfort, because you know at once your in safe hands) and charm and puts a smile on your face. Like PCO it is all instrumental, mainly utilising guitar, mandolin, trumpet and harmonium. This is an album of 20 tracks, all good, all different but all with same assured musicianship and pure joie de vivre. A must, my teenage daughter even liked it.

This is fresh, skill-filled music. At times sounds a little like Penguin Cafe Orchestra but more interesting. Sort of unplugged folktronica, simultaneously modern and medieval - recorded in 11 hours in a church with no electronics, this is atmospheric and mood altering stuff. Each instrument is crisp and clear - I think lovers of ECM chamber jazz will find something here too. Too much of the time we are bombarded with over produced computer generated mush - here the quiet and intimate interaction between instruments feels like therapy, to be listened to ideally - but also to be heard as interesting ambient music - the album suits both purposes well.

Basically I recommend it for lovers of interesting music - if you are not such a person perhaps you should seriously consider becoming one.

Nicely done.

Simple, pure and beautiful, this album is made up of short perfectly crafted pieces of music, the musical equivalent of an Emily Dickinson poem: sparse, original and haunting.

Just lovely. My only complaint is that some of the songs are so short. Beautiful work by this unconventional trio.

By Mr. Bear - Published on Amazon.com
This is a very interesting album full of delicate, intimate playing, with some pieces bordering on the atmospheric and experimental. You'll hear some instruments here that you probably won't hear anywhere else - they're just not played or recorded. I'm really glad that I stumbled across this album. It has quickly become one of my favorites for long drives through sparsely populated places.
