I picked up this book personally because of the main character and I having a common issue. We both have Cystic Fibrosis, a life threatening condition that affects mainly the lungs and digestive system. We have to live with the idea that we may die young, daily medication and treatments and the never ending dilemma of coughing.
I knew reading this would be hard, a lot of the issues Hallie had I could relate to. I found myself tagging pages where I could relate to certain situations and feelings, I would say to myself, " yes I know how you feel" or "story of my life"
Hallie is in her late twenties, slowly dying. She is on the transplant list just waiting for the call.
The story focuses on 6 main characters and I don't want to give anything away but this story is extraordinary. It is so beautiful that it will leave an ache in your heart. It is a must read.
I want to thank Jill Mansell for writing this book. Not only did it make me feel better about myself, Jill has brought awareness to the fact that we need organ donors.
I may one day need new lungs. I may need a new heart. I may even need a new liver. I just don't know. I'm not on the transplant list, and I am very well for someone with my condition. However in time my health will decline and I may need new organs. So it's very important to me that there are more organ donors out there. I am on the organ donor list, I have been for 10 years now. I don't know what I can give away... Probably not a lot. But if I can save even one life then that's all that matters.
Thank you again Jill for this amazing story.
This novel is one that has been receiving some great reviews around the book blogging community and I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. I am very pleased I did, like other novels I have read by Jill three amazing things about you did not disappoint.
I love the characterisation in this book as each of them seemed to remind me of someone I have known over the years, whether it's Hallie who harbours a love for someone she can't have, the delightfully funny Joe who always manages to make a joke out of everything but is a secret softie at heart, or the spiky and downright awful Lena. I loved how even Jeremy the grumpy but wonderful cat is given an important role in this book and that, I think is where Jill Mansell's true talent lies. I have read many of her books and her characters touch my heart in every one, whether I'm meant to love them or loathe them they always come alive for me and that was definitely the case in this book.
I have to admit to laughing out loud at certain points in this book, and I am quite glad I read it in the privacy of my own home as I can't imagine what a sight I would have looked laughing like a hyena on a sun lounger around the pool. I think this is especially true if someone had then seen me a few chapters later with tears of sadness running down my face. This book was definitely one that pulled at my heart strings but also helped by adding a fair splash of humour meaning that I wasn't in a sobbing heap throughout.
I did find that at the beginning of this book things felt a little disjointed, I couldn't see how the stories connected and there were a few times when I had to either stop and think or head back a few pages to find out who a character was or how they were related, this is something I do tend to struggle a little with when stories have a large cast of characters. Once I got about a quarter of the way into the book this small issue was ironed out, I found that the story flowed a lot better and my enjoyment of the novel increased hugely. The slight disjointed beginning is the only reason for my four anchors review, otherwise this would have been the full five from me.
If you are one of those readers like me who gets emotionally connected to your characters then please be prepared to both laugh and cry along with Hallie and Co in this fantastic offering from Jill.
As well as Hallie, there are also two other main female characters - Flo and Tasha. When the book started I thought that somehow we would find out that they are all school friends who know each other but this is not the case - their paths do all cross but not in the way you would expect. In keeping with the "three" theme (three is the magic number after all), there are 3 very different stories to follow and 3 men to fall in love with too.
I Jill Mansell has done it again, she has excelled herself! This book was FANTASTIC! I have read enough Jill Mansell books by now to know when tissues are going to be needed and i could sense this was coming about 3/4 of the way in - i immediately turned the kindle off and saved the rest for when i was at home, alone! Thank goodness i did!! About 4 pages in when i resumed my reading and i was crying my eyes out - tears of happiness and sadness. A wonderful book.
