This is probably the most fascinating book I have ever read! Mannix knows his stuff and the book is exhaustively researched and historically accurate. However, it is the style that grabs you and holds you from first page to last. Mannix makes the Roman Games come to life - you really feel is if you are there. The games themselves were jaw dropping extraviganzas of cruelty and bloodlust. Mannix describes in detail the theatre, and spectacle of the games, how they were organised and run as well as giving us an insight into the lives of gladiators, charioteers, those who worked and fought with animals and even details the lives of those who trapped and transported them. This is spectacle on a grand scale, written in a breathless, riveting and entertaining style.

I am old enough to have read this book first time around when it was published in UK in 1960. It was, and still is, a brilliant read, packed full of detail and statistics, but more than that it brought vividly to life the harsh and cruel reality of those dragged into the arena, and the degeneration of the Roman spectators drugged up on its gore and violence.
The film Gladiator, I feel must have been heavily based on Daniel Mannix's work.
This book appears to be out of print. But again some scenes from the later Roman Circus are extreme.
An absorbing but at times chilling read.

I have been after this book for many years and at long last I pick it up at a bargain price. I can imagine a fair bit of research went into this book and it was a real eye-opener of what went on inside the public spectacles in the arena. Some specialists could get lazy lions to attack by the use of scents to induce an attack. It was a science applied to spill blood. The book explains how not everyone who perished were Christians or Gladiators at the start of the show they would have criminals executed in public and as the killings went on new ways of dispatching the criminals was thought up, each one more gruesome than the last. When I first read this book it was done in one sitting as I couldn't put it down an easy read and an insight into the murderous rulers of Rome who fed the public with their fix for blood.

Found this book over thirty years ago and at first just dipped into it at random but soon got hooked on the narrative and when to the beginning and read it from beginning to end. Found each page just as interesting as the previous and just had to keep reading. Have read it a few times since. As a history of the Roman Games a lot is conjecture based on how similar events are staged to day but where possible D P Mannix as used contemporary accounts of the real games as written by commentators of the time.

My grandad gave me a copy of this book years ago and I read it several times. My son has recently shown an interest in the subject and not being able to find my original copy, I brought him this. I had to read it again before giving it to him and it really is as good as I remember.A wonderful, informative, easy read that leaves you marveling at the ingenuity, cruelty, barbaric nature and wonder of the human race.

I read this book many years ago but it seems only yesterday, the original got mislaid so it is nice to renew my interest in ancient Rome. This was how political rallies started and what they led to.
