About the Author
Reverend Wilbert Awdry was born in Hampshire in 1911. He grew up close to the railway and was convinced that the steam engines all had different personalities. He used to imagine conversations between them. Later when he was grown up and his son Christopher became ill with measles, Wilbert invented the Thomas stories to entertain him. Christopher kept asking for more stories and Wilbert began writing them. The first of the railway series was published in 1945. Awdry wrote 26 Railway books in total before Christopher took over the series.

Only slight down side is it's a shame the beautiful pictures are smaller than the whole page illustrations in the original little books.
This purchase is for myself (63) hurry up please Mr Postman.
I had a look through this book when it arrived and was suddenly whisked back 20 years down memory lane to the days when I loved Thomas and realised, these stories are timeless. I loved them, my son loves them and, unless he draws all over this book, his children will love them too.
The lovely, kindly tone in which they're written will sooth your child (or amuse them if, like me you like to read them in a Ringo Starr voice!) and if you yourself were a Thomas fan in your youth, you'll enjoy reading them again and again and probably marvel at how cheeky Thomas, fussy Henry, arrogant Gordon and obnoxious James are loved so much by so many.
It's also nice to read your children a book that credits them with a little more intelligence than a lot of books do today and employs subtlety in its morals rather than ramming them down kids' throats.

All the pages were then and the pictures seem perfectly big enough for children to look at, but I do take the point that the text runs continuously alongside the pictures.Published 20 months ago by bishopofpontefract
