This is the second recording made by the Mellstock band on the Saydisc label. Once again this album is a Digital Recording. This time it was recorded in 1995.This is a collection of english popular folk songs and this time many of them are from the song collector H.E.D Hammond. Thomas Hardy wrote many books and in those books made many refrences to the traditional folk songs and tunes that he loved and knew. And at the time of writing these books many people would be aware of what these songs were. This gave the 19th Century reader a greater depth of the atmosphere of the story. This recording is important in modern times because we have the same advantage through the work of the Mellstock Band.
The songs are varied in style and texture. The "Prentice Boy" is a tragic ballad whilst "The Tailor`s Breeches" has a humour and jaunty pace, There is a beauty in the "Sheepshearing song" and all of the songs have a typical english folk song peotry about them.
The recording is fine and firm with Bright and clear performance. And the Mellstock band perform on authentic istruments with interesting arrangements. We have concertina, violin, viola, flute, oboe and cello as well as vocals. The Disc also indicates the books where Hardy mentions each song.
This is a highly recommended recording of English Traditional Music. I also recommend Under the Greenwood Tree - The Carols and Dances of Hardy's Wessex Dance at the Phoenix Thomas Hardy Readings: Readings/Poetry & Music

The first of 2 Thomas Hardy collections-the other is Under the Greenwood Tree-is as authentic sounding as the songs were imagined to be and which would be sung on village greens or in taverns at the time
Songs which pull no punches as this was a grim time to live if anyone ever saw Tess Of The Durbervilles

Excellent recording of a really good band. Very uplifting music, and nice clear words from which we have
been learning the songs. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys traditional folk song.

A wonderfully evocative selection! It provides fascinating background to Hardy's novels.

Great series of songs that were sung when Hardy was writing his novels.
