Christopher Awdry is the son of the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry and the boy for whom the classic Railway Series was created, which began as a story told to Christopher as a young boy. Christopher Awdry is the author of books 27-41 in the Railway Series, the first of which - Really Useful Engines - was published in 1983.

Another - the 42nd - wonderful book in The Railway Series.This is the first for 4 years and appears in the 100th anniversary year of the author's father - the Rev W Awdry - who created the Railway Series. His son, Christopher, has written the last 16 books in the series and all of them have been magnificently illustrated by Clive Spong. The first 26 books had a range of illustrators and the tale of their various contributions would fill up a book on its own.
This book consists of the usual four tales and is self-referential as it includes a tribute to the author's father - a neat symmetrical nod as the author was the recipient of the first railway stories as his father read them them to him when he was a sickly child.The picture that Amazon have used is not the actual front cover but a picture taken from page 61 of book 39 in the series - presumably the artwork was not available in time. Thank goodness for Amazon as I have searched at least 6 major book shops and none stock any of the Railway Series but all seem instead to opt for stocking other Thomas related books which are aimed for three year olds. There is obviously a demand and need for these but surely these magnificent books can also find a place in our national book chains as they have remained unchanged over the decades unlike Ladybird books, Observer books and I-Spy books - to name but three classic styles and types of books that have either stopped being published or have altered irrevocably.

A Really Useful Tribute To The Rev.W.Awdry

I bought this book and it was shipped just in time by Amazon, well done.

Ever since 1983, nine years after when Rev.W.Awdry dropped the pen from his last book, 'Tramway Engines', Christopher Awdry, the son of the Rev.W.Awdry wrote his first book, 'Really Useful Engine'. More books were made until about 1996 and year after that Rev.W.Awdry sadly passed away. In 2007, the Railway Series returned with the book, 'Thomas and Victoria', I have it in a 'New complete collection' book in 2007 for Christmas, which I have to say is a great book too. Four years have passed and in 2011, we have a brand new book, 'Thomas and His Friends' in celebration of the Rev.W.Awdry's centenary of his birth and do have to say, it was a really useful tribute to the 'Puff Puff Parson'. The stories were brilliant and so are the illustrations to go along with it.

'Buffer Bashing' is a favourite of mine, the story grew onto me about Donald and Douglas. I'm very happy for how the way it is and since that this the best selling book here on Amazon, I hope there will be more books on the way for generations of fans, depends on Christopher Awdry's enthusiasm towards it.

10/10 for the book, it's writing and illustrations, a credit to Christopher Awdry.

My son loves these old Thomas stories, the original paintings are a delight and make the stories feel less like stories for very young children (like the current Thomas and Friends). The stories are told in a more adult manner with more 'grown-up' vocabulary (better for older children who still love these stories). These books are classics!

Great, okay not the original author by his son does a good job. I have stopped reading them to my son; many years ago! Now I read them for me. I enjoyed them when I was little, discovered them again with my son and now, its me again! Peep peep says Thomas!

Ever since Christopher Awdry's Railway Series books with volume 27 - 40 are back in stores, along with the 41st book released in September 2007 called "Thomas and Victoria", there comes volume 42 book with much dedication to the author of the Railway Series who bought it all since 1945 for his centenary.

Christopher has wrote four more stories focusing on how Thomas rescues a swan at the bridge, Gordon proves himself to be a hero and all the engines on the Island of Sodor, celebrating the century of the Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry. (1911 - 1997, Also known in the books as 'The Thin Clergyman')

Overall the book itself is really enjoyable to read along, so I would recommend everyone. And especially including some parents who has their kids with their passion of adventures with Thomas and his friends on a magical island, go buy the book, and enjoy reading these wonderful stories to them. :)

Supposed to be the final volume in this much-loved Railway Series (which started in 1945!). After growing up reading so many of these wonderful stories by the Rev W. Awdry & his son Christopher about life on the Island of Sodor, it's sad that it finally has to come to an end, but alas...every engine does indeed have it's day!

Still, like the rest of these charming books, Thomas & His Friends is a perfect piece of children's literature, featuring simple, wonderful stories and beautiful artwork. The size of this book is perfect for small hands, and the volume itself provides wonderful closure to a series that will live on forever.
