A Fine Offering from Christopher Awdry

This is the thirteenth book to be written by Christopher Awdry, son of the Reverend Awdry, original author of the series. Much like his father, C. Awdry produced a book every year from 1983 until 1996. (A further volume was published in 2007). This was the book for 1995, which was a significant year for the series, as it was the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of 'The Three Railway Engines', the first book in the series, and the stories in this volume reflect this. It focuses on some of the major characters who have featured throughout the series, including Gordon and Edward (who both starred in the first book), and Thomas who has become the most famous of all the Awdry creations.
The book begins with an announcement that the Golden Jubilee celebrations are due to take place, followed by an interesting and amusing incident with Gordon and some crows. The second story tells of how Edwrad loses a wheel in a field, whilst the third takes us back to Thomas' branch line, before the final story in which Awdry tries to gather as many engines together as possible, for a special celebration to mark fifty years, which, despite some negativivty from some of the bigger engines, appears to be a success as a High-Speed Train (called Pip and Emma, who featured in an earlier book) bring in a Royal visitor.
Just about all of Awdry's creations appear at some point in this book, which is fitting, and this book must contain some of Clive Spong's best art work, (particuarly in the first story 'Birdstrike'). The Royal visit was a nice touch, though not particuarly original as it has been done before. One problem I do have with the book (and I nearly gave it four stars because of it), is the title. To add 'Thomas' into the title is not only unnecessary, but it doesn't make a lot of sense in the context of the stories, as it's really about all the engines. To me, this is an unsubtle way of trying to promote Thomas's fame through the original books, of which, to the Awdrys, he was just one of the engines. However, at a time when the TV series was starting to dominate Thomas' world, this is a nice set of stories which has otherwise not been influenced by the TV show, and this one seems to reflect that more innocent time. If that's the sort of book you're after, and you haven't yet discovered C. Awdry's books, then I recommend this as a good place to start.
