About the Author

Elizabeth Hunter is the author of the Elemental Mysteries Series. She is a graduate of the University of Houston Honors College in the Department of English (Linguistics) and a former English teacher. A native of Central California, she currently lives in Southern California with a six-year-old ninja who claims to be her child.  She enjoys reading, writing, travel, and bowling (despite the fact that she’s not very good at it.) Someday, she plans to learn how to scuba-dive. And maybe hang-glide. But that looks like a lot of running. A Hidden Fire, This Same Earth, and The Force of Wind are now available from all major online e-book retailers. Book Four, A Fall of Water, will be available in Summer 2012. Learn more about the Elemental Mysteries series at ElementalMysteries.com or contact her by e-mail at elizabethhunterwrites@gmail.com. Elemental Mysteries turned into one of the best paranormal series I've read this year. It's sharp, elegant, clever, evenly paced without dragging its feet and at the same time emotionally intense.

I'm extremely grateful that book #2 was just as strong as book #1. Expect the unexpected. This book is a free fall with a twist. You really don't know where you're going to land in the end... *grinning* I certainly didn't, and now I can't wait for book #3 to continue reading about Gio and Beatrice's adventures.

There are just so many things I like! The way Gio comes back into Beatrice's life, how she is introduced to his world, the intrigues and carefully woven dialogues. How strong a woman she becomes in the years he's been away...

Again I have to stress out that it's a pleasure to see old school vampire for a change - very intelligent, very sharp and showing his age, instead of a man with modern sensibilities.

Quote:

With lightning speed, he came to kneel between her knees. He could hear her sharp
inhalation and the sudden rush of her pulse. Looking up, he met her dark eyes.
"You think I'm arrogant?"
"I know you are," she said breathlessly.
"Then what would you have me do, tesoro?"
She blinked and he saw her gaze drop to his mouth. "Wh--what?"
"Should I forget five hundred years of experience killing my enemies and protecting those
who belong to me so that your modern sensibilities are not harmed?"
She was still looking at his mouth, and he forced himself not to smirk.
"Would you have me confer with you before every move as if I was a mere boy looking for
approval?"
"No, I mean--"
"You called all the shots in your relationship with that human, didn't you?

I really enjoyed this tale and the development of Gio and B's romance and relationship is really well played out. The story is expanding very well too, without it seeming to be 'looking around' for the next direction. Overall 'This same earth' was a great read and an excellent 'holiday' book.

BUT!!! The constant smirking, snickering and snorting that accompanies almost every conversation between Gio and B made it seem at times like I was reading a chapter in My Little Pony. It was sooooo irritating! It really let down an otherwise very well crafted and written story. Hunter has an excellent imagination regarding story telling but seemingly a limited knowledge of suitable verbs. So I have to knock marks off for clunky dialogue.

But I have ordered the next book so I'm willing to give Hunter another chance :) !

I really enjoyed how the book started with entries from B’s journal. Although I got a little confused, but after going back through the pages I realized that the years were changing – once I got over my airhead moment – I thought the entries were a brilliant way to pass the years.

After five years of having no contact with B, Gio finally comes back into her live. I think Gio was expecting B to welcome him with open arms, but instead he gets a slap in the face (ha, pat on the back for B). I didn't think it was possible but I love B even more in this book, she’s smarter, feistier and doesn’t fall all over herself to get back with Gio (although I really wanted her too, but I was happy she stood her ground with him).

Gio has changed a bit too – after realizing it was a stupid idea to ignore B for five years, he starts doing things to get her attention in the hopes that he'll wear her down into taking him back – it’s so cute…he fights for her, and that makes me love this Gio, so much more!

My favourite thing about the book is that you get to see a deeper side to Carwyn, when Gio and B visit him and his family – he’s not just a wise-cracking wrestling lover, he’s also a dad…

I honestly love this series, Hunter has such a different take on the paranormal genre.

This is a brilliant continuation of the story of Giovanni and Beatrice, book 2 of 3 in their story. The author writes in a way that truly captures the heart, and unusual I find is that we are made to care for the other characters just as much as those of the main 2, in fact even those characters that we don't get to meet, for example Loan. Without giving away anything away plot wise, I am very excited to discover that we will get to meet Loan in the 5th book in the series (about Carwyn, not B and Gio) and a whole host of other characters. We join the story 5 years after the first instalment, 5 years in which B has had time to mature and mourn and maybe move on with her life. For much of this book we see B struggling to forgive Gio for leaving her and then the development of their relationship and moving forwards. However their relationship isn't the only plotline in this book and story of mystery, intrigue and betrayal is truly amazing. I believed every word of this book, truly lived it and recommend it to all, even if you are not a vampire fan. Do read the books in order though, enjoy!
