What a great collection of songs! I originally had this on cassette way back in the 70's but , although I have them all on individual albums, I had to buy this as it is just fantastic to listen to them all in one album. I was a little disappointed with the sound quality and would love to see a properly mixed remastered collection but for now happy to sit back and listen to a great band!

I merely add my second to the notion that this is a compliation that stands above all others.
The smooth flow from song to song is as if the artists had composed an album, not individual songs, intending them to be played in exactly this order. I originally purchased this on cassette in 1974, and latter on LP. Now, I am buying the CD!!! Greater praise hath none!

when a group has had a career like the moodies it is hard to encompass your back catalogue onto 1 album. Well they have done it here, a great achivement and a great album. Like a chocolate fountain.

This Is The Moody Blues a double compilation album by English prog rock band, The Moody Blues. Released in late 1974 while the band was on a self-imposed sabbatical. Though all of the songs were previously released on albums (with the exception of "A Simple Game" which was a 1968 B-side).
The Moody Blues have sold in excess of 70 million albums worldwide and have been awarded 14 platinum and gold discs. Among their innovations was a fusion with classical music, most notably in their 1967 album 'Days of Future Passed', with the amazing song, 'Nights in White Satin', featured on this compilation. The Moody Blues formed on 4 May 1964, in Erdington, Birmingham, England. Founder members Ray Thomas, John Lodge, and Michael Pinder soon gathered in Graeme edge and Justin Hayward to complete a sublime line up. Singer , composer and multi instrumentalist, Denny Laine was in there for the early days before his departure, leaving after enjoying the success of 'Go Now' and eventually joining ex- Beatle, Paul Mccartney in his new band 'Wings'.
This Is The Moody Blues was a commercial and critical success, reaching number 14 in the United Kingdom and number 11 in the USA before the end of the year. Each of the tracks are mixed on this album so that they meld into one continuous journey through the classical, folk and rock influences. The harmony of the voices have not been matched in bad format, with the exception perhaps of Crosby , Stills, Nash and Young, until recently with the Fleet Foxes! I have always loved the classical symphonic merger of orchestra, electronic synthesizers and rock guitars and this is a wonderful example of it. Raining outside, fire on, headphones on, close your eyes and enjoy the trip! Old world prog rock of a regal status!

Unlike many of their contemporaries, the Moody Blues could easily fill an exceptionally good double album with their "Best of" - and still leave some tracks missed out. I too bought a Moody Blues Compilation on vinyl and was desparate to listen to it on CD.
The main reason I wanted to write this review is to emphasise that the two tracks above listed "London Festival Orchestra" are not instrumentals - they are just the backing for the main tracks.
If you have heard "Nights in White Satin" on the TV or radio - buy this album: the rest of the album is also top notch.
Incidentally, Barclay James Harvest recorded a track called "Poor Mans Moody Blues" - as BJH are no mean band, this is some compliment.
