Product Description

Product Description

The collaboration between opera star Eileen Farrell and musical director Percy Faith in 1961 resulted in 'This Fling Called Love', a truly wonderful album of Great American Standards.

Eileen Farrell was an operatic soprano who had a nearly 60 year long career performing both classical and popular music. A leading newspaper stated that she "was one of the finest American sopranos of the 20th century; she had a voice of magnificent proportions which she used with both acumen and artistry in a wide variety of roles." Her first album of popular music made the Top 20 and she was then teamed with conductor Percy Faith for the album 'This Fling Called Love' resulting in a classic album of beautiful performances of Great American Standards. The 9 bonus tracks are from the album 'Together With Love' in which Farrell was accompanied by Andre Previn. On CD for the first time and re-mastered in glorious stereo.

A wonderful disc - the first 12 tracks conducted by Percy Faith are amazing. Ms Farrell certainly knew how to interpret a lyric, not surprising considering her operatic credentials, and her vocal tone is sumptuous. The bonus tracks with Previn are slightly less spectacular but still enough to make the likes of .... (well you know who I mean, I'll only get abusive comments if I name names won't I) cry into their porridge.

If you love great singing of any sort don't hesitate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Farrell can do it all! 31 May 2013
By Michael Langmaid - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
I've been a fan of Eileen Farrell since the '60s when she was the cover feature at Time Magazine. One of the most arresting quotes in that long ago article came from Maria Callas who said something like this: "Rudolf Bing [the then Director of NY's Metropolitan Opera or The Met] believes that he has all the greatest opera stars singing today, so why doesn't he have Eileen Farrell!" Her career at the Metropolitan Opera was much too short-lived mostly because Bing wanted to push her into Wagnerian roles and wouldn't give her much amplitude to sing all the operatic variety she was eminently qualified to do. One of the great losses is that she not only did not stay very long on opera stages but regrettably was not not much recorded. One of her few complete recorded opera roles was opposite Beverly Sills in Donizetti's Maria Stuarda.

Now segue to This Fling Called Love. . . .

This Fling Called Love is wonderfully conceived and executed. The major part focuses on her work with Percy Faith & Orchestra--but another fine section covers work that she did with Andre Previn. All the songs are thematically tied into love songs as you might anticipate. The orchestrations are vintage Percy Faith but more importantly showcase Farrell's gloriously warm soprano without any of the fussiness and stiffness that we hear from almost every other "crossover" voice. The reason: Farrell was never a crossover voice. She began her career in early 1940s radio, singing whatever she was offered but mostly popular music. Later her career embraced concert performances of Bach, Wagner, and other famous classical composers. Toward the end of her public career she was heard recording jazz. Baroque, grand opera, popular music, or jazz--she seemed able to do just about any vocal style that she set her mind and splendid vocal cords to.

The selections on this CD are one hit after another. I've been re-listening now to her rendition of "My Romance" for over a week in my head because this perfectly imagined and executed Rodgers & Hart song [as perfect a lyric as anything by Franz Schubert or Hugo Wolf] is indelibly etched by her artful but artless and perfectly warm voice. After listening to her version, I played versions from YouTube offered by Ella Fitzgerald, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme. Farrell meets them all note for note and word for word. Everyone one of these great American pop artists has a smooth, lyrical, and conversational way with a song without any histrionic or "look at me now" tricks.

This was one of my best CD Amazon purchases in some time. Whether you have ever heard of Farrell or whether you have followed her discography, my hunch is that if you're a fan of the Great American Songbook and a devotee of glorious singing, you won't be disappointed with this beautiful "pop" album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious 15 Feb. 2014

Eileen Farrell has always been a great favorite of mine as a dramatic soprano, particularly her Wagner. I first heard her singing popular song on CBC radio one evening about 25 years ago. The song was The Party's Over" from this album. I had never had popular song sung so beautifully, nor understood every word without having them sound exaggerated. When the announcer said it was Eileen Farrell, I almost drove off the road. There was in her singing no trace of the opera stage, the overly dramatic, or anything else to give away her alternate career. This was singing at it's best, regardless of style or source. I am so thrilled this is available now in this format and at such a reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eileen Farrell - This Fling Called Love 5 Jan. 2014

I have this album on vinyl as well. I've never heard anyone else perform "I Never Has Seen Snow" as well as she does. Her glissando just stops your heart for the moment. She is one of the few opera singers I've heard who brings a sound to more popular music that is just as incredible as her opera singing. It's hard to believe listening to this she was primarily an opera singer. Listen to her Puccini "Arias" album. You may end up getting it as well even if you're not an fan of opera.
5.0 out of 5 stars Eileen Farrell has got to be one of the greatest singers of all time 10 Aug. 2014

Eileen Farrell has got to be one of the greatest singers of all time. She sang operas at the Met among other opera houses with a great dramatic voice, even Wagner did not stop her. However, she also sang popular songs and jazz with an entirely different voice. This particular album is a little schmaltzy due to Percy Faith and Orchestra but Eileen sings these mostly great songs so well with her pop voice that you do not even care. I recommend that you buy this album along with a recital opera album and compare the two different voices this great singer had.

5.0 out of 5 stars What A Voice 4 Jan. 2014
By Crazy About Books - Published on Amazon.com

Eileen Farrell was gifted with a voice that was great in both opera and popular songs. Listening to this CD gives me a sense of appreciation of each song that I don't get when listening to other "interpreters" of the same songs . Yes " My Romance " here has the best expression and the best diction of this song
