Alt-J are that rare thing - a rock band that genuinely has an "alternative" sound. Unlike most such bands, they make use of dynamics and space in music - they are not scared to be quiet or reflective, slow in tempo with every sound and nuance exposed. Each song is a miniature masterpiece with its own instrumentation and each could be the soundtrack to a moody, atmospheric, but very classy, TV drama.

This album makes use of an unusual variety of acoustic instruments as well as including electronics, samples and programmed music. Guitars are subtle and interweave with drums that never overpower and always add interest. "Choice Kingdom" is preceded by an interlude which has a chorus of Recorders and has vocals that could have been the Fleet Foxes with gentle acoustic guitars and percussion. Bloodflood PT II has distant acoustic piano and a brass arrangement of trombones and euphonium, mixed with programmed beats!

Some tracks sound a bit like Sigur Ros , while others are reminiscent of the slower songs on Joy Division's "Closer" - but the whole always makes for a distinctive group sound that is in fact quite unlike anything else going on and there are no concessions made towards commercial acceptance - each track takes its time and unfolds organically and many become virtually instumentals where the arrangement takes over and the vocals just become one part of the overall texture.

Vocals are important with many backing singers and on "Warm Foothills" different singers seem to alternate every word to haunting effect. Elsewhere sampled vocals are layered and at other time harmonised so that they become part of the instrumental timbre. But it's all part of the unique "sound" and the excellent production.

Even better than their first album An Awesome Wave. The songs grow better with 8 to 10 listens and then you just can't stop putting the CD on. I buy 3 or 4 CDs a month and this is highly likely to be my top album of 2014, if not in the top 3.

A great mix of sounds and volume on most tracks. I've been waking up all this week with the track Nara in my head.

For me, this album truely is awesome, following on from their previous album 'An awesome wave' (which I played over and over).

It feels like they have changed up another gear to break even richer new ground that we can now share!

Just plain wonderful! Not going to describe the music, that's been done before, but when I heard it for the first time it made me feel as great as listening to: Imagine; Dark Side of the Moon; Goodbye Yellow Brick Road; Definitely Maybe for the first time I heard those. On repeated listening it just gets better and better. So much variety; so many lovely melodies, rhythms and textures. A magical creation. Well done!

I came across the first Alt - J album, An Awesome Wave by pure chance, but it quickly became my favourite background CD for almost all things. I was excited to hear they had a second album coming out and have been patiently awaiting it's arrival. The snippets I had heard of the song 'Hunger of the Pine' only served to fuel the flames of excitement, but there is always the doubt that a follow up album whilst having a couple of good songs will be a complete let down.
Alt-J did not fail to deliver, this album is everything and more than that I had hoped for, as like the last seamlessly blending together to create an all together pleasurable listening experience.
I'm onto my third listen already! Well done Alt-J, well done indeed and thank you, really good music these days is hard to find :)

Loved alt-J's debut, long anticipated follow up has NOT disappointed. Absolutely fantastic! Can't deny I was concerned about the change in line up but Nara totally won me over. As with the first album, I think the better tracks are among those not released as singles. Recommend, recommend, RECOMMEND!!

Really good album. I really enjoyed Alt-J first album and this adds a great new dynamic. The first album in ages that I actually feel is a story and lots of thought has gone into its flow. I listen to it loads in the car. something of the Mike Oldfield about it and i really enjoy the syncopated percussion and off beat instruments and rhythms.

From the very first listen, Alt J's debut album 'An Awesome Wave' took my breath away and has rarely been off my CD player since. Needless to say, I was excited for the release of this second album. Despite the first single releases 'Hunger of the Pine' and 'Every Other Freckle' massively wetting my appetite for the second release, I can't help but feel a little disappointed with this new album. Although there are some stand out songs; including 'Nara' and 'The Gospel of John Hurt', the album does lack the drama and originality of 'An Awesome Wave', and the two singles cannot be beaten. 'Left Hand Free' is also a good stand out tune, but doesn't seem to fit in with the sound of the rest of the tracks. It was always going to be almost an impossible act to follow such an outstanding first album. I will still enjoy playing this one, and I am sure I will grow to love some of the other tracks, but you cannot help to draw direct comparisons between the two. I still maintain that Alt J are one of the best bands to come out of this country in the last few years, and their individual sound cannot be compared to anyone else out there. Their song production, imaginative lyrics and monastic sounding voices are completely unique. They are also an excellent live band.
