This is a quick read, the story of a dinner party of thirtysomethings who have all known each other since University. All the guests have a feeling that life has turned out not exactly how they imagined. It is told through the eyes of three of the participants: Maria who is getting over a broken heart, Filipe who never recovered from his first love and Joana the party hostess. Although the story is only told from their perspectives, it very cleverly weaves the other guests into the tale.

Joana is snobby, shallow, pretentious and out and out bitchy. She spends the whole night looking down her nose at all her guests, as well as her husband, yet for some reason I felt she drew the whole story together. By far the most interesting character around the table, without her the story would not be half as good as it is.

It is translated from Portugese and on the whole it has worked well with only a very few minor glitches. The story flows naturally and dialogue seems natural and believable. The story can be read in an evening and is recommended.

It took me 1/2 to read it, i just couldn't stop until i reached the End. Just great! I saw myself as one of the characters, with the same doubts and the same goals. The early 20s expectations vs the truth of the 30s. The friends, life, society changes... nothing is really how we expected!
Read it and for sure you'll be placing a review in the next days.

This is a very well written book that draws you in slowly. The beginning might seem a little too slow and formal, but you will actually feel a part of the dinner party - the dialogue and characterization is so good. You will enjoy each of the layers as they are cleverly revealed, no matter what your age.
