This is a must for anyone who likes classic thrillers. And currently at a fantastic price.
A very faithful interpretation of the book, which is now around 100 years old, this brilliant dramatisation by Bert Coules (he is the best in this genre) is augmented by great acting from the distinguished cast. It's up to the minute for suspense and to me it seems flawless. I play it again and again.

From beginning to end, a great drama. Even if you already know the plot of this famous story, you will still enjoy. The action is skilfully laid out with the excellent acting expected from the BBC.

A worthwhile buy.

I first heard this on radio 7 over last Christmas/New Year and enjoyed every minute. The set up of the story from beginning to end is wonderful. If ever there was a blue print for spy drama then this is it. When you see the name Bert Coules you just know you're in for a great story. Tom Baker's rich, elequoent tones are superb casting.
Richard Hannay's adventure has him chased to Scotland and back to London. The police are after him for a murder he didn't commit and the Prussians want him for what he may, or may not know, about the 39 steps. The tension is built with the 'will he/won't he' evade capture by both parties, and can he decipher the code that has been left by his 'friend' Scudder and stop Germany and Britain from going to war.
BBC production is top notch, creating fantastic atmospheres and background 'smells'! Buy this only if you want to listen to a wonderful, gripping, enthralling 1 hour and 50 mins of entertainment.

Not a faithful interpretation of the book but it felt very much in it's spirit. I'm a great fan of Richard Hannay and I have already listened to the recording twice. Its also a good recording, clear and crisp, so very easy listening. The Thirty Nine Steps (Classic Drama)

When I read in one of the other reviews that this was dramatised by Bert Coules, I snapped up a copy straight away. I wasn't disappointed - this is an exciting, "rattling yarn", and certainly good enough to hold it's head up with other versions such as the Hitchcock movie.
