The story is very good. I wanted to keep reading, and I really liked the characters. The plot is good, and fairly deep, and everyone in it has their own agenda. The bad guys are really bad, and I had a smile on my face as Enrique... well, best not spoil it for anyone.
There are one or two times when I could not understand someone's justification for doing something, or for not asking the obvious questions (plenty of mystery in this story), and at times the occasional page doesn't read particularly well - also there are a lot of typo's (such as "obvious" instead of "obviously", for instance, rather than spelling mistakes - although there are one or two of those as well). But for the most part it's a great read.
Also, "sometime" and "some time" are not exactly the same and don't always convey the same meaning!
However, nothing that would make me think of knocking a star off the rating :)
...but Stephen, you just gotta get a proofer/editor on the payroll! This may have been 5 stars for me with some editing.
All-in-all, it's a great story, and written fairly well with just a few minor annoyances. I think this is an author who will be writing some great stuff in the future with a bit more experience, and I'm very much looking forward to book 3.
The second edition added more character to the book and tied up a few loose ends. Although if truth be told the diary snippets are a bit annoying - almost spoilers in retrospect. Overall the writing style was good, fast paced and interesting. I really enjoyed both editions, faults and all.
'The Third Side' continues the story of the White Knights. We now know the characters and what has transpired leading us up to this point thanks to the first book. Because of this the story is set up perfectly and gets straight into the action, set a few months after the first book ended. There is some fairly epic visual action going on which I love, it really has my imagination going. The action continues to be fast paced and exciting and at the same time well described without going into too much detail (some authors seem to enjoy detailing every grain of sand and its precise location in the universe).
As it stands For £1.99 this book is a complete steal, as is the first in the series. I am waiting in high anticipation of the final book in the series. Although, these books are fairly short by some standards there is a lot in them and the universe that Stephen Sweeney has created would make an excellent setting for future books and short stories alike.
In brief; Loved it, highly recommended, I almost feel guilty for paying £1.99! BUY IT!
It's a shame that book 3 is not out yet, otherwise I would have bought it already.
If you like Science fiction then you will enjoy this book immensely.
It has been suggested that you get the 2nd edition of Book 1 rather than the 1st edition as it improves the story some what, but I was already half way through book 1 before I found this out, so can not say how much better the story was.
All in all worth the £ I paid for it (Book2), and will have to sit and wait for Book 3 to arrive :(
