Cadfael seems to invite mysteries in spite of living as a Benedictine and therefore supposedly confined to the monastery but...... Ellis Peters allows us to suspend disbelief and her sense of place and historical perspective are convincing. The stories are varied with a spice of love interest here and there but the mystery is the main thing!

This Third Omnibus is some more wonderful stories dealing with the Monk come detective Cadfael. If you have seen the series then these stories are a delight to read. Derek Jacobi was excellent as Cadfael and the series was filmed in Hungary instead of England. These stories make cosy reading for cold winters.

Perhaps I've read too many Brother Cadfael books recently, but this one seemed routine and a little hackneyed: the characters all merge into one, and Cadfael's deductions are unfailingly accurate with not that much evidence.

OK but no more.

Ellis Peters writes prose as if it were poetry. She is a wonderfully evocative writer, and uses the English language superbly. She carries one into the world of 12th century Shrewsbury and its surroundings, and her characters are all skilfully portrayed. I feel one can never tire of Brother Cadfael and his 'chronicles'. They can be read, with increasing appreciation and pleasure, over and over again.

This is basically three excellent crime novels in one big package. Anyone familiar with Cadfael will know the pattern they follow. Anyone not familiar will be in for a treat. Cadfael is a detective but with a difference. He's a monk in the 13th century! What this omnibus offers is a bargain way to immerse yourself in this thrilling genre.

I had all of the Cadfael books a long time ago but they got lost in many house moves. I bought them again as omnibus editions as this was the cheapest way to replace them.

The omnibus editions are a good size. They are not too heavy considering they have three books in each. The type is nice and clear.

I'm going to copy this to each omnibus review.

The stories are excellent of course. Well crafted, atmospheric, great characters and plots.

Wonderful books. Great atmosphere and there's always a love story involved in each novel. I've read all 7 omnibus books and am now re-reading them.
