Product Description

Review

'Many...fascinating illustrations of how engineers have enhanced our lives'.

(Press Association)

"Smart, insightful, and fascinating. Madhavan shows how engineers turn problems into opportunities. The engineering mindset is something we should all study and embrace. It applies to every aspect of life."

(Walter Isaacson, author of Steve Jobs: The Exclusive Biography)

“Guru Madhavan not only dispels any hint of darkness concerning how engineers think, his delightful book explains how the designed world of machines and systems interacts with the social world in which we use the tools that engineers give us.”

(Alvin Roth, Winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics and author of Who Gets What―and Why)

I recommend Guru Madhavan's Think Like an Engineer. A real pleasure to read, and lots to learn.

(Tim Harford – The Financial Times' Undercover Economist and presenter of BBC Radio 4's More or Less)

"Think Like an Engineer will enlighten you about the minds that transform our lives. It beautifully conveys the true vision of engineering and its impact on nearly every aspect of life and global progress. This book is refreshing, most approachable, and highly recommended for anyone interested in understanding engineering."

(C.D. MOTE, Jr., President, US National Academy of Engineering)

"In this riveting study... [Madhavan] puts behind-the-scenes geniuses such as Margaret Hutchinson, who designed the first penicillin production plant, centre stage."

(Nature)

“Guru Madhavan offers a compelling explanation of the engineering perspective. With potent stories that are heartwarming and at times heartrending, Think Like An Engineer is an enjoyable and instructive read.”

(Vinton Cerf, Chief Internet Evangelist, Google; Winner of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering)

“The engineering mindset is a transformational mindset. In deftly revealing some of its organizing principles, this book reminds us that behind today’s global challenges are solutions and opportunities waiting to be realized.”

(Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman, World Economic Forum)

"This thoroughly engaging book demonstrates that engineering thinking is truly multidisciplinary, multinational, and multicultural. Through its diverse cast of engineers and wide-ranging examples of their achievements, Think Like An Engineer leaves little doubt that our world is a better place because of the engineers who inhabit it."

(Henry Petroski, Aleksandar S. Vesic Professor of Civil Engineering and Professor of History, Duke University; author of To Engineer Is Human and The Essential Engineer)

About the Author

This book "does not do what it says on the tin". I was looking forward to getting an in-depth understanding of "how Engineers think" - not unreasonable, given the title of the book. I have an interest in this subject, I have a degree in Production Engineering and work as a technology lawyer and I meet many Engineers in the course of my work and greatly respect and admire them. I was hoping to get an insight into the Engineering mind-set and methodology of problem solving and understanding how the creative / analytical process moves from problem to solution much in the way the series of Freakonomics books does, entertaining and informing at the same time. I was bitterly disappointed. This is at best authorship "by numbers". This is a regurgitation of a selection of anecdotes nothing more - many are turgidly dull. There is nothing that ties everything together in an engaging way. Even a rudimentary observation of the process of problem solving is missing and THAT is what would have made this book worth reading. The substantive book is 190 (large spaced with large typeset) pages long, the remainder is padded with research notes and glossary - pointless and self-indulgent from an author with nothing else to say on the matter. This is a very clear example of "Marketing over (subject) matter". Best avoided.

More engineer and personality orientated than engineering. Beautifully written, but, I was continually thinking, 'C'mon, man. Get to thinking like an engineer.' Too much time spend in chatting about India, and the Ganga - the river Ganges. Really not an engineering book. Title very misleading.

Featured on BBC Radio 4 on More or Less, in a BA airline magazine, and an LSE lecture - Mr Madhavan provides an insightful view into the world of the engineering mindset. Further than our image of NASA engineers with pocket protectors, this is a book that changes this perception with a collection of delightful anecdotes and stories. We only think of engineers when things go wrong - time to have a better understanding of the role of engineers in the world around us.
