Having owned 3-12 for 15 years unread and deciding to clear them out earlier in the year for space I gave 3 a chance and was pleasantly surprised, enjoying it enough to buy 1 and 2 and now having finished the first book I am more than glad that I gave it a chance.
Starting with a contrived just arrived in Sanctuary troop briefing being a thinly disguised explanation of the back story of the town, the book continues with loosely linked short stories by various authors introducing the various and instantly memorable main characters, be they warriors, thieves or wizards, ending with an essay by Asprin on the creation and management of this first multi-author collaboration volume.
What I most enjoy about the stories is the direct or indirect interaction between the characters. Even when they do not know each other their paths cross or they are aware of the infamy of each other, some characters making referred to cameos but not actually having any part in a story.
Sanctuary is no place for children or Granny, pretty much anything goes for the authors and 'Contains Adult Themes' is certainly applicable in this case, but this makes the books even more compelling not being mainstream or holding back.
With 12 core books and another 18 or so spin off titles I can see working my way through them all eventually as they really are a hoard of hidden gems.
