This time around for the Cosway treatment is Stu Cross. I didn't once envisage Stu having his own book, because being completely honest, he seemed to be quite an unfavourable character. His only shining moment came in Hearts of Blue when he took rap for his younger brother Lee, which resulted in a two year prison sentence for himself.
As part of the conditions of his release he commences an adult education course taught by our heroine, Andrea Anderson. Since her husband's death years prior, Andrea has lived a quiet-repetitive life. Stu's arrival in her classroom is an awakening she can't quite understand, and an injection of colour on a once bland canvas.
Stu was so much more than I expected him to be. He was the epitome of a cheeky chap (he's a Cross after all) but he also harboured a strong sense of family I never felt him possible of. His attraction to Andrea resulted to many humorous moments in the classroom, but it was the serious side to Stu that really got my heart thumping.
Cosway excels at writing a vivid story full of likeable, colourful characters. Although their life experiences may not be similar, it's impossible not to to find relatability in their emotions - which she describes so well. The forbidden element ratchet up the sexually tension, but it was the vulnerability in them both which really stole my heart.
One thing was for sure: Stu Cross wasn’t as predictable as I thought, and even though I was the teacher in this situation, somehow it felt like I’d just been schooled.
I loved these two characters throughout the book. There is a spark between these two characters from the very start, and Andrea cannot resist the sexy, naughty, bad boy Stu. But she see’s something more in him, she sees through him and even though she know she shouldn’t, she cannot resist him. Andrea also has a past which means she struggles to get her head around moving things forward with Stu. Stu on the other hand is in Andrea’s classes for a reason, but that reason starts to make things difficult when he starts to fall for Andrea.
“I could take or leave the slacks,” he breathed, all gravelly. “But those lips and your big brown eyes, now those are what get me all jacked up.”
This book is thoroughly entertaining, sexy with a dash of drama and heart in the mouth moments. There are also some funny bits and some really tender, special moments too. There are plenty of twists and suprises which keeps the story flowing really well. And that epilogue! Superb – although I did see it coming to some extent!
"Stu Cross made me feel alive. So much so that it took him coming into my life to make me realise I hadn’t been living."
It’s great to see some of the other characters from the Cross family too who we have met in some of the previous books! And we also meet Andrea’s cousin Alfie who plays a pivotal role in the book, who is a wonderful character.
Overall another fantastic book to add to this series!
Those Cross men- so perfect! And the writing style improves with every book!
I'm sad that the next book will be the last one in this series- I have loved every one!
Stu Cross is the eldest of the clan, but he feels like he's failed as a big brother and left Lee to take charge. However, if you are familiar with book 4, Hearts of Blue, you will know that he stood up to the plate, and spent two years in prison to take the fall when his families dodgy car business was busted. Now out of the nick, he has a mission to steal a famously missing Rembrandt painting, and the only way he can do that is to get close to adult education teacher, Andrea Anderson.
Andie is a widow at the age of 28, having married young and lost her husband to cancer at 24. She is a kind, and gentle soul, who wants to make a difference to people's lives by teaching, and keeps herself busy to take her mind off her grief.
When Stu enrols in her course at the college she is employed at, she is shocked to find herself developing feelings that she thought were long since buried, and every time he is near her, she is more and more drawn to his contagious charm and charisma, the only thing is, she cannot for the life of her understand why he is pursuing her, and is adamant that he has an ulterior motive...
I just love the banter, and the tension that LH Cosway is able to convey so well, she is such a unique writer, and humour and good solid connections are always present in her stories, as are the very well thought out and likeable, supporting characters.
Stu was adorably vulnerable and self-deprecating, but also strong and fiercely protective of anyone he cared about.Read more ›
