Format: MP3 Download
I am new to Ruth Moody's music but am very glad I discovered this album. It is very good, and parts of it are truly excellent. It is tuneful, well performed and is exceptionally well arranged and produced, making it a pleasure to listen to.

The album is pleasingly varied. Overall it has an Americana-type feel, but opens - courageously and very successfully - with Trouble and Woe, which sounds like a traditional Appalachian tune with banjo and minimal backing. This is followed in contrast by excellent One and Only, a beautiful, band-backed modern Americana song, and the shifting mood continues throughout - one of the album's great strengths.

Another great feature is the arrangements, which are brilliant in places. Often restrained touches add immense atmosphere and character to a song - the use of minimal strings on One and Only, and the couple of brief appearances of a Brass Band sound on the fabulous title track are a couple of examples. The musicians are uniformly excellent. Ruth Moody herself is a very good singer and musician and the rest here do her proud. They are technically excellent and get the feel of the music exactly right.

I have to say that not every track is a gem. I'm not bonkers about the version of Springsteen's Dancing In The Dark, and the closing track Nothing Without Love is a pretty ordinary song, but the good bits (which is most of the album) are really, really good.

I tried this album because Mark Knopfler makes a guest appearance (unmistakeably playing and singing harmony on the lovely Pockets). It has been a delightful discovery for me and I warmly recommend it.

Ruth's 2010 album, The Garden, did not really grab my attention. Great voice but songs that were, for me anyway, difficult to get into, pleasant enough, but nothing that really stood out. This album I bought because of Mark Knopfler's involvement, and what a difference a couple of years makes. Still the same unbelievably beautiful voice, but now with songs that catch your attention right from the off and make you want to listen again and again. Country/Americana is probably the best description. Banjos, guitars, keys, flutes, fiddles, and some unmistakable Knopfler electric guitar on "Pockets", which is the best song on the album for me. The title track also deserves to be singled out - just sublime! Any criticism? Only minor. I think the last song on an album should be one of the strongest and most likely to click with the audience. Here the last song isn't really in that bracket, and that's a bit of a shame. Always nice to sign off with something truly special. Ruth Moody is going to be a big name in her field - there's no doubt. A very talented song writer and singer. Glad to have found her.

Heard a track of this CD on the radio and there was an immediate response that had me enchanted whether it was the interpretation or the voice but I wanted to hear more so I bought the CD
The first track for anyone new listening would be her cover of Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark", it is enchanting and a different version of the song.
Give this CD a chance, play it a few times and especially allow the lyrics to be really heard. These wilder things had so much meaning for me and the spirit of the music and the singing of the lyrics was first class.
I would be loathed to listen to new artists, maybe because of age but this CD has proved that I still can pick a great album to listen to.
i will be checking out more of her material, Ruth Moody is worth it

Ruth is a captivating vocalist and has obviously caught the attention of Mark Knopfler who plays on, The song Pockets. My father is 86 and loves her music as does my 20 year old daughter! How many musicians can do that! I first heard her on Bo Harris who played her rendition of Springsteens Dancing in the dark. Ordered both her cds immediiately after hearing that track alone.

What a amazing album These Wilder Things is just beautifully crafted album, Ruth Moody surely must be one of the most talented song writers and singers of her time. The only song I had initial reservations of was her cover of Bruce Springsteen's Dancing in the Dark and I could not have miss judged that more. As a big fan of the Boss her arrangements and version of this song is just humblingly masterful she has made it her own in my book.

I saw Ruth and her band supporting Mark Knopfler earlier this year and they were wonderful. It's a beautiful, delicate country album with some wonderful songs, especially These Wilder Things and Life Is Long. One of the few albums I've heard recently that's made me just stop and listen from start to finish in one go.
