This a great book. As a story for children it is really exciting, imagine having a dragon in your house who keeps growing and your Mum doesn't notice. For teachers it's really useful for doing work on size comparison - big, bigger, biggest etc - and for talking about the idea of someone wanting to be noticed and the lengths they go to to get it.

This book tells a disarmingly simple story of a boy who wakes up to discover a kitten sized dragon in his bedroom. He strokes it and all is well. Things begin to go wrong however when he tells his mother. His attempt to act on her firmly stated belief that there is no such thing as a dragon lead to all sorts of escalating problems for them both. The situation is finally resolved happily, but only after it has been fully acknowledged and the dragon 'owned' for what it is. This is a modern fable with a fairly profound 'moral' about the importance of dealing with problems or new situations with honesty and realism and the dangers of denial!

A timeless classic of a children's book, which I remember as one of my favourites when I was a child. My 4-year-old daughter now enjoys it too.

It is wonderfully simple tale about a dragon that grows a bit too big, and a mother who refuses to recognise its existence, even as it fills the house. Just the right kind of crazy for young children. It is also beautifully illustrated. Suitable for any age.

My son and daughter absolutely loved this book when they were young. Just a wonderful story with beautiful illustration. I bought this copy for my granddaughter's birthday at the request of my daughter who asked if the book was still available. Amazingly it was and reading it again brought back so many memories for us all. I'm sure my granddaughter will love it just as much.

Parents should listen to their children!!!! We forget often how to do it!
This book will help you do it ... "there are no such things as dragons" explains exactly how the kids have such amazing fantasy of they are capable only of their age!

Then, parents, buy and read it to your children, became "child" again, and by entering in their "fantasy world", you'll be able to understand them in the way they should be understood!

I bought this for my nursery as the children were interested in dragons. We had a whole topic on dragons in the end and went on a dragon hunt. Another book to use for small medium and large. Some of the words are American but we just changed those to the English version. A little bit of a moral to this story as well!

We have just discovered this book again while sorting out bedrooms. My 10 year old read it to my 7 year old last night and they were both chortling at the antics of the dragon despite having heard the story several times a few years ago. As a previous review says, the story can be a basis for discussion for various issues but it is also great fun to read just for itself. Jack Kent has a nice understated humour and the illustrations go really well with the text.

I first bought this book over 25 years ago for our son. It quickly became one of his favourite books and was read to him more times than I care to think about. Copies have since been bought for nieces and great nieces and our son recently bought it for his god daughter. I would recommend this to anyone with young children. The book arrived within a couple of days and in excellent condition.
