Touching yet chilling and heart-breaking at times

This is an incredibly sad book but incredibly touching and hopeful and full of life. I cried a lot when I was reading it. It’s not clearly stated in the book but I think Pepper has autism. I’ve read a few books featuring kids with autism and their behaviour and traits are similar to Pepper. The book takes every mother’s nightmare as a focus – a child taken. The author focuses on the experiences of the child rather than the parents which I haven’t come across before. The book really chilled me at times. Who is this man ‘Uncle Dan’ and what are his motivations? He sends Pepper to school which is not exactly what you’d expect from a child kidnapper. He hits Pepper once but seems to genuinely care for him. Pepper does not seem to fully understand what’s happened to him and that ‘Uncle Dan’ is a bad man. The ending of the book broke my heart a little it was so sad yet so happy at the same time.

The Idle Woman

Dense, gripping and rather moving

This Fairlight novella takes us into the life of a little boy named Pepper. He’s eight years old, used to live with his mother in Memphis, Tennessee, and knows that he doesn’t see the world in quite the same way as other people. He dislikes loud noises, finds it difficult to read people’s emotions but finds numbers very easy to tackle: indeed, counting often keeps him calm when the chaos of the world threatens to overwhelm him. Now Pepper lives with Uncle Dan in Arkansas, but he’s having trouble adapting. In fact, he’s beginning to suspect that Uncle Dan isn’t really his uncle at all. But how can one lost little boy get hold of his mother when the only phone number he knows is missing its crucial three-digit area code?

It all happens one day on a school trip to the local pizza place and games arcade. Pepper is hiding from his classmates when he meets a man who introduces himself as Uncle Dan and tells Pepper that his (Pepper’s) mother has gone to heaven and that he (Uncle Dan) will be looking after him now. Pepper is suspicious – he remembers faces, and he can’t remember ever seeing Uncle Dan before, but Uncle Dan knows that he likes ice cream and Dr Pepper, so it must be OK, right? Pepper gets into Uncle Dan’s car with him and goes home with him – but home is a very long way away. When he gets there everything is strange: Uncle Dan has chickens (which Pepper likes, except the rooster) and he doesn’t understand at first what Pepper likes to eat (yes to bacon, no to eggs), and makes him go fishing and watch football at the weekends. Pepper knows something is up, but he has no idea what to do about it… until Uncle Dan finds himself obliged to enroll Pepper in the local elementary school.

Seeing things through Pepper’s eyes makes the story immensely moving, as we instinctively understand the things this little boy can’t. I thought Golightly did well in conveying the complexity of Pepper’s mind and the challenge for any child of finding their way out of a dangerous situation. It’s a terrifying picture of how easy it can be for children to be abducted, especially when they’re vulnerable and perhaps don’t understand the social contract quite as well as the average child. (This all reminded me very strongly of the book I had when I was little, that 1980s classic We Can Say No! which taught children never to go off with a stranger – anyone else have this?) It also makes for some moments of almost unbearable tension, especially towards the end, though I was impressed by Pepper’s resourcefulness.

This viewpoint does mean that we don’t always understand as much as we might like to about other people in the story. We know that Uncle Dan has lost his own son, but how does he really think that plucking a random child from a crowd will supplant that loss? Why did he choose Pepper? How did he get hold of a (forged) birth certificate? But these lacunae don’t really affect the main narrative thrust of the tale, which manages to feel much more dense and gripping than you expect. Something for those who enjoyed Room, offering a similar picture of a shocking situation through the eyes of a child.

One of my favourite books of all time is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I think one of the reasons I love it so much is just the innocence of the protagonist, Oskar. It makes the narrative so raw and endearing and ultimately makes that novel more heartbreaking than it ever would have been with an adult narrator. There Are Things I Know does exactly the same thing. The narrator Pepper is an eight year old boy who struggles with words, but finds it easier to turn them into numbers in order to remember them. He is good at remembering numbers. He can remember the number his momma always wrote on his arm when they went out incase he got lost. One day, when a man called Uncle Dan takes Pepper from That Amazing Pizza Place and tells Pepper his momma has died, Pepper knows he must never forget the number written on his arm, because he knows that Uncle Dan is lying, and that he must find his momma.

I think the reason this book will be so popular is it is just so endearing; Pepper is so likeable and throughout the whole novel I just wanted the best for him, determined for him to succeed. If anything, the book could have been longer. Golightly writes the plot in a concise manner and ties off all the loose ends, but I just wanted more of Pepper, to experience more of what it was like to be in his head. It was also really lovely to see another novel with an autistic protagonist, and helps raise awareness of autism for all who read it.

Moving on to the end of the book, the last 30 pages were so tense but made for an incredible end. I really didn’t know where the author was going to take it, but what she chose to do was perfect for the novel and I felt very satisfied reading the last few pages. Golightly successfully communicated that the world is a scary and unfortunately insidious place, but that, even when it seems so, all is not lost.

There was a potential for a plot hole depending on how big the search for Pepper was in Tennessee, seeing as it is right next to Arkansas, where Uncle Dan was living. She didn’t touch on many details to do with the search for Pepper, so I don’t know how big it was, but I did think that there might have been news of it on the tv, or radio? But really, that was a minor point that didn’t affect my enjoyment of the novel at all.

This novel was written as a good reminder of the power of innocence in an all too ignorant world. Pepper really is an unforgettable protagonist, and the books I read from now will have a hard time living up to the standard of There Are Things I Know.

I really enjoyed being brought in to the perspective of Pepper, seeing everything the way he would. I felt as if I went through the journey with Pepper wishing for him to get back to his routine life with his momma.
