The basic premise follows the protagonist "Master_G" as he journeys into the afterlife & beyond to find his dearly departed soul-mate Lucy- who's lost in the NeverRealm; a dream-like world of both horror and delight in equal measure. The story unfolds first person via extracts from Master_G & other characters entries in a "dream" journal: The NeverPages.
The beauty of this novel is the surreal way the story is told - it reads as if you are in a dream, with some of the most stunning and frightening imagery I've ever read. The dream quality of the whole book is really enticing & completely messes with your head; seriously - it's like tripping without the use of drugs!
If you are after something to really provoke you, you can't go wrong with this thrilling novel - it really beats all the run of the mill fantasy stuff that's out there; with amazing ideas that will haunt you long after you've finished reading.
The Never Pages is an ambitious look into the deep (DEEP) psychology of dreams and relationships. If it is not, then I'm not sure what it is `about'. But then that is what is refreshing about Thomas's work. He has not set out to achieve a particular objective. He is not seeking to enlighten you with a particular message. He has simply put pen to paper to take his reader on a bizarre journey.
The key characters we become familiar with are the young man Master G, of which we know nothing about but who cleverly undergoes various transformations during his journey, whilst somehow remaining the same. Lucy, the object of Master G's affection and ultimate goal of his journey through the Never Realm. Brekker, a reckless and deceitful scientist and friend to Master G. And of course Paisley the dog. We follow the four through various psychedelic dream scenarios, all of which are rigorously documented by our protagonist Master-G, and which somehow weave together to make a coherent environment and plot into which a committed reader can become very involved. I say `committed', as The Never Pages is by no means a `light read'. But it is a daring and accomplished novel which identifies its creator as a force to be reckoned with in the Literary world.
If you've never dipped your toe into sci-fi/fantasy fiction, then you're in for a rare treat.
A surprising and inventive novel beautifully told; well worth the read.
