S-Express's Soundtrack LP from mid 80s is one of my all time faves, and some of the 12" remixes that appeared during that creative phase were excellent (and many never made it to CD ofcourse). The second album, with the talented Sonique, took itself far too seriously and, as a result, disappeared without trace - a pity as Trumpets was a great track that hinted there was still fun in Mr Moore's thought processes. Then there was the cheap compilation "Ultimate", covering both albums successfully....and now "Themes (Best of)" which, ahem, effectively does exactly the same as Ultimate. No rare 12" here, the awful Pimps, Pushers... appears though (why?). Inclusion of Funky Killer (longer version from 12") and one of the dub remixes of Trumpets (Let It All Out) are a nice touch, but what about the older 12" remixes, the instrumental promo teaser of Nothing To Lose, Mantra "Baby Ford Experience" etc etc. Nope, selected 7"/LP edits are all you get here, and although the bulk of the material is still excellent, this outfit deserved more on this unnecessary reissue compilation. So probably best to get the original CDs, and possibly Ultimate - a nice sleeve design doesn't hide the fact this is a bit of a rip-off!

Brought back many happy memories listening to this best of collection. to my mind, the first, self titled, album was the best. the other album was too much like a stereotypical song album, whereas the first was uniques in its song-style; the tracks seemed like musical pieces that helped form the genres. Nevertheless, i enjoy Mark's work and still listen to this stuff today. Fab.
