Review

Within their focus on human fragility, there is something defiantly forceful about the eight new plays written for Theatre Uncut. The diversity of the plays is such that the evening doesn' t peak and trough, but rather branches out in all directions. --Amy Powell Yeates, The Observer

The plays may be short, but there are no duds and several have real force. If, during the 1980s, playwrights often seemed silenced by Thatcherite cuts, this new generation are finding their voice and channelling their anger… These plays may be bite-sized, but they bite back. --Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

The intensity of the drama signalled an arts community already gearing up for protest on a scale not seen since the 1980s. Now it's time for these plays to be taken up by one of the major Scottish theatres, and presented in front of much larger audiences, until the message gets through. --Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman

They are unlikely to do so, but it would be nice to feel that members of the coalition government would take the time to read this short book. The experience could change not only their own lives but those of so many of their constituents. --British Theatre Guide

This collection of short plays by various playwrights addresses the countrywide spending cuts in the UK and have been performed by thousands of people in theatres, schools, kitchens etc.,. In a way, they bring back 'the political', something that has been largely missing in British theatre since the 1950s 'angry young man' movement, back on to the stage. Since these plays are generally around 7-10 pages long, they could be easily performed/read in class too.
