really first class thriller involving Japanese traditions of honour and obligation, very violent in places, one of the best movies i.ve seen this year good performances from all concerned especially Robert Mitchum in one of his last roles. A must see if martial arts and true drama are your thing

This film is an absolute gem. Excellent choice of characters; the interesting story line and well scripted dialogue, permit the audience to appreciate the Japanese culture that emerged in the decades following WW2.....western influences already permeating into traditional Japanese lifestyles.
A favourite film strongly recommended...

First rate performance from Robert Mitchum. Great story line which is full of twists. Watched this many moons ago and its still as fresh as the first time I watched it.

Cought it the first time on tv in the heat of the night, it has been great to discover this little masterpiece of the Seventies, with its rough truths just shown as it was, the way movies did those years. Uncommon plot, great attention to the details, a sound script involving until the last sequence, a rich revealing foreground. This dvd edition keeps it all intact, both the original and the dubbed versions, the screen format and colours. Worth to be collected and seen from time to time thanks to the work of great director and a respectable even more great cast and all.

One of the few movies that show that the Japanese also had a few personal problems as they came home from WW2.

Robert mitcheum gives his usual heavyweight performance but possibly Ken Kakakura steals the show as a brooding samurai trying hard to settle into modern post war Japan.

The sword fight at the end of the movie is an amazing action.

I've always been a big Robert Mitchum fan. One of America's finest actors & this 1970's outing shows why. Showing the differences between East & West & also the similarities it is an excellent film about duty, loyalty & obligation across the Pacific Ocean.

Yes it's dated but for me it is worth the time even just for the final fight. Realistic for a change and not like all the tripe you too often see from Hollywood.
