Katsu (Internationally acclaimed actor Koji Yakusho from Shall We Dance and 13 Assassins) plays a 60 year-old lumberjack who lives in a small, tranquil village in the mountains. When a film crew suddenly arrives to shoot a zombie movie, Katsu finds himself unwittingly roped into assisting the production and is increasing frustrated by the pushy crew, especially the young, seemingly spineless director Koichi (Shun Oguri (star of Crows 0, Sukiyaki Western Django and Space Brothers). However, an improbable friendship soon develops between Katsu and Koichi, as Katsu comes to see joy in the filmmaking process, and gradually helps Koichi to recover his sense of self. Soon, their bond inspires an unusual collaboration between the villagers and the film crew.

The Woodman and the Rain is a fascinating and sweet comedy/drama which observes the moments where life intersects with movies. Watching the friendship between the two leads grow was heart-warming and funny, not because it tries to be funny, instead the humour naturally comes from the contrast between the people in this village and the professional world of film-making, as they are both at odds with each other. It's the central relationship between the 60 year old KŰji Yakusho and 25 year old Shun Oguri where the film had most value. It's a tender coming of age story in which one rediscovers his ability to be a parent and the other recaptured his confidence as a film maker. The Woodsman & the rain is a totally pleasant experience, highly recommended.

I went into The Woodsman and the Rain completely cold, having never heard of it or knowing anything about it. Perhaps this is part of what made the film such an absolute delight. This 2011 Japanese comedy-drama is simply wonderful. It has a relaxed pace, appealing characters, great actors and an enormous amount of understated depth and soul. It's Japanese to the core, not just from its story but from the way it's shot - full of static and medium long shots and deliberately long takes. This is a real crowd-pleasing gem of a film.

A beautiful story with interesting and often hilarious characters. I felt as though there were one or two things left unanswered by the end, but none the less I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
