I've never really liked Sonic Youth, so I was surprised that this album was by the same people.
The layers of processed guitars screech + roar across a variety of frequencies, yet are firmly rooted within a base of droning noise and mechanical beats ... despite this though, the tunes remain catchy enough, and there's a sense of humour present that prevent the songs from sounding too self indulgent...

This is one of my favourite SY records and it comes from arguably their best period. It contains the Kim Gordon track G-Force and their Into The Groovey cover (both essential), and guitar experiments all essential, and some other Sonic Youth throwaways that no fan could throw away. There is some other stuff that is dated but its not much and with the exception of the Mike Watt piece it is very very short. The whole album has a nice feel and sound and value to it. I haven't had Geffen's "expanded" version yet but it looks the same as the Blast First issue.

I LOVED THIS ALBUM WHEN IT WAS FIRST RELEASED AND IT MORE THAN LIVES UP TO MY EXPECTATIONS. IT IS BRILLIANT AND REMAINS A FINE ADDITION TO SONIC YOUTH'S ILLUTSRIOUS CATALOGYE.
