This must rate as one of the best introductions to the Viking era ever written. It covers the basics of all aspects of Viking society from use and problems of sources of evidence, through dress, language and literature, social and politcal structures, religion, ending with the Viking expansion. All the subjects are in concise and easy well titled chapters of around four pages long. After reading this introduction you would be well prepared for either advancing onto more detailed and specialised papers and books, or the information gained would give you a good understanding of the age from a general knowledge perspective.

This book is wonderful, not only does it tell about the important deterministic aspects of the Viking age. But it also tells you the smaller aspects such as the colthes they wore and they brooches they created. I have read many viking books and never before been so interested in what the historian ad to say.

This is a really good book if you want some basic knowledge on a lot of different topics within the viking topic.
The author clearly knows her vikings, and although some statements are not entirely accurate, not much archaeology is.

You get to learn about ships, politics, religion, trade, cultivation, travelling and much, much more.
I would recommend this book to people interested in vikings - but with only little or a basic knowledge about vikings.

At times a somewhat dry read, this text nevertheless offers a comprehensive and engaging insight into Viking history and society, dispelling myths and revealling Viking culture as a very human phenomenon. The colour of the original manuscript may have been diluted through translation as this work reads much like an essay, but the fascinating content overcomes this. Recommended as a readable text to provide a reasonably broad understanding of the period of the Vikings and their relationship to subsequent north-west European cultures.

This book is a fairly good introduction to the Vikings. In its favour, the book is a pretty thorough introduction to Viking culture and history. However, it is rather sparsely illustrated and the translation (I think that it was originally a Swedish work) is heavy, dull and not always particularly clear, meaning that reading this is a bit of a chore. Nevertheless, it is a good introduction to an area which rarely receives good literary attention.

The Vikings were amazing people and this book perfectly describes them and their endeavours. It came just in time for our visit to the Viking! exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh where we in fact saw the carved head pictured on the front cover. Now we keep going back to the book to read up on certain aspects of the exhibition.

The book itself is an excellent point of reference for everything Viking. Personally I found it a struggle to get through certain sections of it though, although the attention to detail is admirable for me it was a bit much, for example all the measurements for the ships etc. This is not a criticism of the book because like I say it really covers everything, it's just that my personal interest in the Vikings was not enhanced by reading this for whatever reason.

Incredibly in depth, it is a little dry in the way it is organised but if you want to know about the vikings and how they lived this is a great book.
