Debi Gliori writes and illustrates superb books for children, and this one is no exception. Every village on the island of Mull have their own special kind of cat - sulky ones, excellent catchers of fish, musical ones and soft and woolly ones. However, the cats in the fishing village of Tobermory are more interested in typical cat pasttimes - catching mice, watching the clouds and sleeping. The villagers, alarmed that nobody visits to see their cats, attempt to train them to do something special. Unfortunately, none are interested, except for one ginger tom, who is determined to be a 'special cat'. With an excellent message, so wrapped in the text that it is not preachy, and delightful illustrations, this is a great book for children. Unlike many picture books, it has a fair amount of text, meaning it is suitable for a wider age group - it will probably be enjoyed by 3-7 year olds - and their parents!
