"The stock market explained" is the reasonably honest part of the title. "Your guide to successful investing" frankly is nonsense. The only way this book helps is by telling you where else to look and pay for information. There are also pages of waffle, for instance the book tells you that Preference shares are seldom issued in the UK anymore and then takes up six pages telling you all about them, it's just simply padding. Don't waste your money on this book, you might just as well buy 13 lottery tickets, the odds of either turning into a success are miniscule.

There are two types of investors in this world. The type who want to micromanage every share, and the type who want to put their money in a fund and let the stock market get on with it.

For the micromanagers, Hall describes investment products in a detail bordering on the excruciating - easily providing satisfaction to the most pernickety of investor. However, he gives precious little advice on how to invest successfully using these tools. It's a bit like describing every component part of an aeroplane without mentioning how to fly.

For the casual investor (easily 90% of the market) he provides a chapter of useful description on pooled investments and another on general investment strategy. Within that, he dedicates a page to online supermarkets, where an increasing number of pooled investments are made. However, two chapters and a page do not constitute good value for money bearing in mind the rest of the book's detail is completely superfluous to this kind of reader.

In the final analysis, this is a very detailed and well researched book which - and here's the real mystery - has completely failed to capitalise on either of its potential key markets for book sales. A book about making money that won't make money? Someone clearly hasn't done their homework.
