A fascinating account of a superpower dominating invaded locals and their spritited defence and how global politics determine local outcomes. Illuminates a peroid of european history most of us know little about, but which set the seeds for the events that would eventually lead to the first world war. Also wonderful if you want to understand Italy,

The siege of Venice is a very detailed account of what happened not just in Venice but in much of Italy during 1848-1849. In fact only a small part of the book is actually about the siege itself (which only started in 1849 and did not last all that long). I did find the part on political developments in Venice in 1848 somewhat too heavy and the parts about the military operations a bit too light; then again this is a very good book for anyone who really wants to know all about this period.

The 1848-9 Siege of Venice is a fascinating aspect of 19th Century Venetian history and had many important consequences. This book deals with the lead up to the Siege in great detail, often overloaded with unimportant facts. It concentrates on minor skirmishes between Austrians and Piedmontese and it takes the reader many, many pages to get to the Siege itself. I felt that the author completely missed the drama of the Siege and should have shortened the earlier chapters to give more emphasis to the Siege. For example the Austrians launched aerial bombs on Venice (a military first) and I needed to know more about the damage caused, some of which is still visible. Venice was rapidly expanding as a tourist centre in the 1840's - what did tourists like John Ruskin feel about the Siege? What impact did it have abroad?
A sound historical account but too political and too factual. A definitive account which recounts the drama and destruction of the Siege is yet to be written.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really like this book. 25 April 2012

I think this book is great. There is not to many books on the Italian wars of this time and the ones that was written are usually pro-french, anti-Austrian and anti-Italian. Even though the author here is a tad bias against the Austrians, he present both sides almost equally and explains their commanders and armies and political situations as well.

Compelling narative of a little known event - taking place simultaneously with the other democratic revolts- yet unique for it 's location- the tourist mecca known as La Serenisima.

4.0 out of 5 stars An important addition to the historical record 23 May 2008
By Bryan Tagas - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
There is very little available in English (or apparently Italian for that matter) covering the period of Venetian history from the declaration of the Venetian Republic in 1848 to the reimposition of Hapsburg rule in the following year. Keates successfully fills the gap with a detailed and well-written narrative of the ultimately unsuccessful struggle for independence and its relationship to events in the rest of Italy during the Risorgimento period. Keates convincingly shows that Venice's defiance of Austria in the face of difficult odds was an integral part of Italy's movement toward national unity. Recommended especially for those readers who are familiar with the general outlines of Italian or Venetian history but wish to dig a little deeper. The great historical writer Jan Morris, who has written much about Venice herself, calls the book "Majestic".
4.0 out of 5 stars Good. 6 Feb. 2015
By Alexander Suraev - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
The book's title is a bit misleading: only the final part describes the siege of Venice, at least three quarters tell about the preceding events. Battles and even some skirmishes in Veneto and Lombardy are narrated in detail, sometimes one wishes for a less lingering examination of the struggles that occupied Italian patriots and Habsburg loyalists in the years 1848-49 and before.

I would have gladly exchanged some accounts of maneuvers in terra ferma for a more focused look at the Venice of this time, at the minutae of the life in rebellious city.

It's very unlikely that another book on this subject will be written anytime soon so a reader wishing to examine the Venetian uprising of 1848-49 has to make do with the author's preferences.

Having said this I can only praise Jonathan Keates work for it's profoundness and enthusiasm the author shows for the subject that can tempt only a more devoted reader of Venetian history. The work took 20 years of Mr.Keates' free time and was not sponsored by any institution, any foundation.

The prose is quite good though perhaps unremarkable - save for the one peculiarity that was returning to amuse me again and again: the word intransigent is not widely used these days but in this book it has found a veritable sanctuary, at least two dozen intransigents populate The Siege Of Venice's pages.
