This is a beautiful little story that mixes animal adventures with a touch of magic and a wondrous glimpse of a different culture. It’s perfect for animal-loving girls everywhere.
Lotta is an ordinary girl who is finally going to Norway to spend Christmas with her grandparents, and to meet her great-grandmother for the first time. Lotta has always been fascinated by her great-grandmother’s stories about reindeer herding as part of the Sami people, and Lotta’s very excited to meet real reindeer.
I loved how this story wove in the stories of Lotta’s family with her own time-travelling/fantasy adventure that sees her take part in her own reindeer herding trip, involving the care and rescue of a small calf. It’s also beautifully illustrated throughout, helping to show the distinctive clothing that Lotta encounters as well as her time with the reindeer themselves.
If you have an animal loving little girl in your life, then I thoroughly recommend this book. It’s quite short and the frequent illustrations make for an easy, manageable read from ages 7+. There’s also plenty for an adult to enjoy while reading along, especially during the Christmas season.
