This, and its companion volume, The Penguin Encyclopaedia of Classical Civilizations, is a concise but detailed fount of knowledge of the greatest civilizations of the past. Well-written and fully illustrated, they are superb value for their price. I use them for professional reference.

Extremely useful book, lots of detail on civilisations and exact cities. It is definitely a very useful book and I would definitely recommend it. My only problems are that it can be a little hard to read sometimes and the information can be a bit outdated as new research has been done since it was published. The best way to describe it would probably be as the most useful addition to ancient civilisations reading that you can have, but I would recommend reading other books alongside it for complete/up-to-date understanding.
