It took me three weeks to read this book. I read the first 150 pages in one day and was planning to go online and buy the next two I was that engrossed in the story. I'm so glad I didn't buy the next two. I struggled to finish this and I'm glad it's over.
So what went wrong? well, put simply it's too long. It's over 950 pages, everything is over described, it's repetitive and the pacing is achingly slow; what was he thinking?! where was the editor? Whole sections and characters (Theo, Maus) can be removed and it would exponentially improve the novel.
It starts out with interesting, fresh and vivid characters: Amy, Wolgast and Carter (an absolutely brilliant character) to name a few.....then it jumps forward in time and we have to endure page after page of bland characters: Peter, Alicia, Hollis and to a lesser extent Sara and Michael are poor outright and terrible when compared to Amy, Carter and so on. They live in fear of the virals yet it all comes across as humdrum.
It's a shame because there IS a good book here; the author had something but it was a mess in the end; why use 10 words when 100 will do.
