I would love to be able to recommend this feeder, but unfortunately I cannot because of one silly design feature. The bottom feeder ports seem to be positioned too far down consequently the seed becomes damp, and the ports constantly clogging up. In essence you only have the two top ports which can be guaranteed to be available for the birds to feed at.
This is such a shame because I love the design and construction in general, it really does look superb. In my garden it is constantly used by, goldfinches, siskins, blue tits and great tits. Unfortunately chaffinches seem to be very awkward birds and cannot really gain access.
A plus point is that it is relatively starling secure. One or two talented starlings can do a balancing act on their chin, and get a few scraps, but they cannot greedily overindulge and empty the feeder in a couple of hours as they had done with many of my previous feeders.
I really wish the manufacturers had carried out more tests on this feeder as it could have been so much better, especially as it is quite a pricey item.
This model offers a useful capacity increase over the non XL version by having a larger diameter tube. The wider tube is easier to clean than the narrower version; I use a bottle brush and remove the bottom plate which screws on. This model also has small drainage holes in the bottom to keep the seed dry. An older version of this product did not have these and was prone to clogging of sodden seed at the bottom of the tube. The cylinder is plastic and from experience will eventually crack (this part is not vulnerable to squirrel attack) but should give many years of service. I'd recommend this product over cheaper squirrel proof feeders for effectiveness and robustness and the XL over the smaller tubed model if you have heavy traffic.
The only downside of this feeder, for me, is that our clever squirrels have managed to figure out that they can simply lift the lid and eat the seed from the top. Not such an issue in itself...but if it rains whilst the lid is left dangling then all the seed gets wet and is ruined. I've found that this is easily solved by an elastic band stretched through inside the cage from one side to the other and then both ends secured on the knob at the top. A bit of a pain and the band generally degrades within a week or so. Must find a more permanent solution...
Still, overall this is a great feeder that will generally keep your bird food safe from squirrels, rooks etc.
Well, I have now won against the war of the greys :)
First off, please bear with the little birdies as they will get the hang of realising that they can feed and go inside the cage. I have now watched robins and blue-tits both feed from this at the same time, whilst watching Mr Vermin from atop of the fence getting the hump. Mr Vermin cannot get in to this, so far. At the moment, he's on the ground feeding off the seeds that the birds throw out, but Mr Magpie and the Collared Doves have seen him off.
For the first time, I have 6 or 7 little feathered friends fighting to get into this to feed.
A product which I will give the 5 stars to without hesitation, and I'm sure my winged friends will feel safer and have more full bellies because of this.
Even worse, the bars are large enough that I've now got rats coming into the garden to use the feeder, and they can get through the bars easily, so the base actually provides a nice little seat for the rats to sit on while they're in my garden. I've had to take the feeder down, and I fully expect it will go in the bin. What a waste of money.
Unfortunately we obviously have too many birds as it only seems to last a few days before it needs to be refilled!
Tip: When refilling, do so slowly, as, if you fill it with small seed, it flies out the holes quite easily.
